Thor: Ragnarok: The scene no one is talking about

By now, even if you haven’t seen Thor: Ragnarok in theaters, you’ve probably heard all about the Easter eggs, references, and even the movie’s biggest jokes. But there’s a pretty important scene no one is talking about.
Major spoilers ahead if you haven’t watched Ragnarok…
Heimdall (Idris Alba), Asgard’s former Gatekeeper, is as loyal as they come, which is why he’s no longer the gate’s guardian. Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is using magic to disguise himself as Odin, and Heimdall knows this. Instead, Loki has placed Skurge (Karl Urban) in charge of the gates.
We meet Skurge early on in the movie. He is showing off his new job and weapons to two lovely Asgardian ladies. One of Skurge’s most priced possessions? Two machine guns, just like the guns he has in the comics. Where did he get them? Skurge tells us himself, “I got these from Midgard in a placed called Texas.” The audience erupts in laughter. The line is particularly funny for the theater I watched the screening at because I live in Texas, so, naturally, my fellow Texans and I laugh and shake our heads. “Ha! They’re throwing shade our gun laws!” we thought.

Later, when Hela (Cate Blanchett) arrives, Skurge is a coward and serves Hela in order to stay alive. Hela then names Skurge her Executioner. Throughout the movie, you can tell that Skurge is full of regret and feels for Asgard, but he isn’t exactly doing anything as he watches Hela kill the Asgardian soldiers.
When a ship comes to rescue the people of Asgard, Skurge hops on with his beloved machine guns. Eventually, Skurge decides to be brave and die for Asgard, so he jumps off of the ship, machine guns blasting and fights Hela. Skurge manages to kill many soldiers in Hela’s army before she kills him, all with two machine guns from Texas. Sure, it’s a movie, a superhero movie, but that still says a lot about the weapons used in battle that many have at home.

I watched Thor: Ragnarok a couple of weeks before it arrived to the domestic box office and again on Thursday, November 2. The mass shooting at First Baptist Church in Texas took place Sunday, November 5, so I’m curious to know what the response to Skurge’s line about his guns from Texas is now after the shooting. Or what if the movie had been released after November 5? Would the theater I was in laugh as hard? Would Marvel edit the line out? Release a statement?

Before you say I am being dramatic, remember that Netflix’s Marvel’s The Punisher canceled their appearance at New York Comic-Con. They were one of the cons main guests, and didn’t attend at all due to the shooting in Las Vegas. And while I feel that Netflix’s move was unnecessary, it’s still odd that Skurge’s line has almost gone unnoticed. Maybe it’s just funny because it’s true.
Thor: Ragnarok is now in theaters and rocking the box office as one of the best MCU movies.
