Earlier today, Sony surprised us all with an announcement of yet another film being added to ever growing Spider-Verse. The newest spin-off will follow Morbius The Living Vampire
The news of a Morbius spin-off broke in a recent report by THR, where Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama were named as the script writers for the film. So far, no other details have been revealed. And Sony has yet to officially comment on the matter so we don’t know much. Regardless, the studio’s confidence in future spin-offs is evident. Sony’s long-term plans proves so, but is it too premature to greenlight yet another Spider-Verse film?
When we consider Sony not having released one spin-off yet, the studio’s plans to create an expansive universe might be for naught. If the first don’t turn out as successful as planned, developing more off-brand pictures like Morbius won’t happen. But until they premiere, there’s no telling how successful spin-offs like Morbius will be.

As long as the spin-offs do manage to gain audience approval, and brings in the big bucks at the box office, Morbius will see its way to the light of day- so to speak. Of course, a lot of Morbius depends on what we actually see in the film.
Will The Morbius Spin-Off Even Get Made?
At the moment, there’s not a lot of information to go off of. But if we look at the comics for insight, there may be some clues as to what we’ll see.
In the comics, Morbius is a scientist who discover he’s dying from a debilitating disease. In an attempt to cure himself, Dr. Micheal Morbius winds up with a form of Vampirism. As a result, Morbius is forced to constantly hunt for victims to satiate his thirst for blood.
After becoming Morbius The Living Vampire, his sights become set on Spider-Man. He becomes Morbius’ main target during a line of blood driven attacks. Later on, Morbius puts aside his foolish squabbles to become an anti-hero who battles real villains—even going on to become part of the Legion of Monsters.
How Will Morbius’ Story Be Told In The Aforementioned Spin-Off?
Assuming Morbius’ comic history does factor heavily into the potential feature film, a few things can be determined at this point. For one, an origin story should go without saying. One in which we’ll see Morbius discover the blood disease afflicting him, along with him developing a cure. Secondly, his becoming a vampire is all but guaranteed. Third, and most important of all, a conflict with Spider-Man. Though, there is one other thing we need to consider: Spider-Man might not appear at all.
Sony has attempted to draw a line between Spider-Man and the rest of the Spider-Verse, so there’s a good chance he’ll be on other business when individuals like Morbius show up. If that is the case here, Morbius may be joined by other vampires. In the grand scheme of things, introducing vampires would make sense.
Marvel / Disney has failed to put Vampire lore to use in their cinematic universe, so perhaps Sony will take advantage of that. It would be a smart move on Sony’s behalf, considering there’s a number of infamous vampires that fans have been waiting to see. And with Sony holding a decent partnership with Disney, a deal could be worked out to see Marvel’s best known vampires take part in Morbius. That being said, there’s still a while to wait before Morbius is completed. So perhaps it best to hold off on the speculation.
Morbius The Living Vampire’s release date is TBA.
