Something Wicked shared more about the Winchesters pasts and Dean’s protectiveness over Sam.

Supernatural has always been about two brothers hunting monsters. While Sam was book-smart (as well as a very capable hunter), Dean took on the role of the protective big brother. He always wanted to keep his little brother safe, even when Sam grew up to be taller than him. “Something Wicked” showed one of the reasons why.

There were some brilliant lines, sad, emotional, and hilarious. Here are the best from the episode.

Cause it says Bikini Inspector on it!

The Winchesters pretend to be CDC officials, but that’s not exactly what Sam’s ID says on it. He’s shocked that Dean would print such clearly fake credentials, but Dean does have a point. How many people actually look at the full details on a badge before believing a person is who they say they are. Most of the time it just requires something that looks official and some confidence.

Shoot first, ask questions later.

Fans know that Dean has always had this motto. Supernatural’s 18th episode explained why. This was the rule John had taught young Dean when left alone in motel rooms. Dean’s personality and need to protect Sam come out more throughout the flashbacks, but this is one of the more poignant ones.

I know why Dad sent us here. He’s faced this thing before. He wants us to finish the job.

The Winchesters initially had no idea why their dad was sending them on this hunting trip. It all gets pieced together when Dean realizes it’s a monster that John had hunted years earlier; a monster that got away. Over time, fans and Sam learn that Dean had been selfish on just one occasion (as every kid is at some point) and it nearly got his brother killed. More than that, it let a monster out and has caused more deaths than necessary.

Dean feeling like everything is his responsibility has always been part of his personality. It’s easy to overlook that starting when Dean was just a kid.

Well, you were right. Heh. It wasn’t very easy to find but you were right. Shtriga is a kind of witch.

Leave Sam with the books and he will be able to find the thing. After never hearing of the creature or finding anything in John’s journal about it, Sam is able to find some details online. It’s one of the times that shows he really is the researcher out of the two and that’s definitely not a bad thing.

Yeah well, first of all, I’m not going to open fire in a freakin’ pediatrics ward.

Dean runs through the three reasons he didn’t open fire on the doctor after realizing he was the shtriga. The first one makes it look like he was thinking about all the innocent people around. The third reason shows that actually he just didn’t have a gun on him to use, but there is hope that being on the peds ward was his main thought!

You’d take care of your little brother? You’d do anything for him?

Michael has to get one of the best lines, because it brings out Dean’s protective personality more. It also brings out the personality of the majority of elder siblings out there in the world. Elder siblings will do anything they can to protect their younger siblings and Supernatural isn’t the only show to have that focus.

You know. I know I’ve given you a lot of crap for always following Dad’s orders. But I know why you do it.

After Michael agrees to play bait, Sam realizes more and more about Dean’s protective side. He also realizes that it plays a part in why Dean has always followed their dad’s orders without question. This is a moment of growth for Sam, as he learns to stop being so hard on his brother and admit that he’s not always been right about situations.

I meant Michael. He’ll always know there are things out there in the dark — he’ll never be the same, you know?… Sometimes I wish that….

Sam regrets one thing about the case; that Michael has now learned about the things that go bump in the night. It’s a beautiful moment between the two brothers, as Sam isn’t just sad for Michael. He’s sad for himself. Sometimes he’d just love to live life without knowing about monsters. And even better, Dean wishes his brother could have had that sort of life.
