The charitable nature of Misha Collins

It’s Day 13 of Cas-mas, and we’re going to take a look at the generous work Misha Collins does for various charities, including his own.

If you follow Misha Collins on any kind of social media, you know that he is very involved in charitable acts. He’s often partnering with his costars for the t-shirt campaigns they run. He also has run several of his own campaigns, with his most recent campaign being the I Wish For This campaign. In I Wish for This, Misha helped raise money in order to provide long term housing for homeless moms and their children.

This is but one example of Misha’s generosity.

Random Acts

In 2009, Misha floated around the idea around Twitter about raising money for charitable reasons. From that his charity, Random Acts, was formed.  Random Acts is a charity that is based on what the name suggests. Their goal is to “conquer the world one random act of kindness at a time.”

When you visit the website, you can see the current projects. You can help with a specific project, or you can just donate out right to the charity. One of the current projects is Stronger Than Storms. This is a fundraiser for hurricane relief, partnered with Jensen Ackles’ company Family Business Beer Company.

Other ways you can contribute to Random Acts is by signing up to perform  your own random act of kindness. People can apply for Random Acts to provide up to $499 and then they can perform their own random act. There are a few restrictions that you need to follow, but they’re minimal. This is a great opportunity for people to help someone in their community out if they don’t have the funds to do it themselves.

GISHWHES

Probably one of Misha’s most famous charitable activities is the annual Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen, or GISHWHES for short. GISHWHES is a scavenger hunt that Random Acts put on every summer; although, in summer 2017 Misha announced that it would be the last scavenger hunt (as we know it). GISHWHES is a way for people all over the world to get together and commit acts of kindness. It would last one week, and the list would contain over 200 items. The list would mix the acts of kindness with silly activities.

Every year, there is always an item that specifically allows the participants to donate to a good cause. This past summer, that cause was funding a dance studio in South Africa. The owner of the studio had been diagnosed with cancer. She worried what would happen to her studio when she passed. GISHWHES participants were able to raise all the money to keep her studio open.  Participants also helped get rescue animals noticed, cleaned up streets, and donated their time to various organizations.

In addition to all the charitable acts, GISHWHES gave people an excuse to go out into the world and be crazy. People could go and camouflage themselves in a pet store. Or perform the Kessel Run from Star Wars as if it were a foot race in the mall.  Notify their local politicians about things that mattered to them. It was a week of fun and charity that many looked forward to every year. It will be interesting to see what form it takes moving forward.
