Could one of these stars be cast as Wolverine in the MCU?

While it would be amazing to see Hugh Jackman play Wolverine in the MCU, it probably won’t happen. Fortunately, one of these three stars could fit perfectly in the role.

Now that Fox and Disney have completed their merger, the X-Men’s appearance in the MCU is inevitable. Some will argue that it’s impossible to determine how the two universes will be integrated, but we all know the X-Men are going to jump over to the MCU. Whether they’re rebooted or not, they’re definitely joining the MCU in some way. The continuity of the X-Men Cinematic Universe is plagued with errors, so it wouldn’t make sense for the Avengers to crossover that way. Furthermore, the question of which X-Men will be joining their Marvel comrades is of interest, namely Wolverine.

Wolverine is without a doubt the most talked about member of the X-Men and has become the most iconic over time. Now, fans are chomping at the bit to figure out who’ll be cast as the new Wolverine, though no details are available. The only thing we do know is that Hugh Jackman won’t be returning to play everyone’s favorite clawed mutant. So, we’re left with an open vacancy. The good news is that there are a couple of actors who’d be perfect for the role.

The reason one of these actors could be the next Wolverine is because they haven’t taken a part in the MCU, nor have they made an appearance in the X-Men Cinematic Universe. And of course they have plenty of experience to call back on. Nonetheless, it’ll be up to you to decide.

3. Joel Kinnaman

Joel Kinnaman might be somewhat of a controversial pick for Wolverine but hear me out. For one, he’s got the build. Kinnaman is solid enough and just as tall as Hugh Jackman, so he’s got that. And, Kinnaman has a fair amount of experience in the action department. Suicide Squad for one, proved that he can hold his own in back to back actions sequences. Edge of Winter showed us his range as an actor. And those are just a few examples of what he’s capable of.

Additionally, Kinnaman is at the perfect age to play Wolverine. He’s 38 in real life but could easily pass for someone in his early 30’s. Whoever plays Wolverine needs to be around that age. Unless Disney is planning on bringing in an extremely young actor and rewriting Wolverine’s origin to fit the character, it’ll probably be someone in their 30’s. Kinnamnan being the ideal choice.

2. Luke Evans

Someone who may stand a better chance at being cast as Wolverine has to be Luke Evans. Like Kinnaman, he has acting experience in both action and science fiction roles. Credits for Evans range from playing the titular vampire in Dracula Untold, to an extremely physical role in Fast And Furious 6. So he’s definitely prepared for all the high-paced action expected of someone portraying Wolverine.

Evans even voiced a parodied version of Wolverine on the Robot Chicken series. It was meant as a joke but his willingness to play the character in any sense gives me the impression of a potential future portraying a live action version. If Evans is chosen to play Wolverine, fans would probably accept the casting choice without too much resistance. Then again, anyone chosen to replace Jackman is going to be criticized heavily regardless.

1. Keanu Reeves

Out of all the candidates who could play the next Wolverine, Keanu Reeves seems like he’d be best fit. for the role. Reeves’ extensive background in action roles is obviously cause enough to cast him, but he’s also apt at doing his own stunts. While Reeves relies on a stunt double at times, he’s skilled in both martial arts and weapons training. Said qualities are the type we’d want of someone playing Wolverine, so Reeves makes for a good option.

In addition to being an ideal candidate for the role, Reeves himself has expressed interest in playing Wolverine. Back in 2014, Reeves did an interview with Moviefone where he told the site that he’d always wanted to play Wolverine. The reason Reeves put those hopes aside is because the X-Men Cinematic Universe found an excellent version in Hugh Jackman’s portrayal. But now that Jackman is out and the MCU is likely recruiting actors for the newest incarnation, Reeves’ name could be quite high up on that list. Though, the question of how much Reeves can bulk up for the role will be something every fan would be concerned with.

Who Else Would Be Good For The Part In The MCU

The names listed above notwithstanding, a number of other actors could be adequate replacements for Jackman as well. Names like Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton have been passed around but no headway has ever been made either way. Hardy is definitely out of the running now that he’s playing Eddie Brock in Venom. Edgerton has a better chance of playing Wolverine, but I don’t see Disney placing their faith in Edgerton. Nevertheless, I could be wrong.

For all I know, Edgerton is being courted as we speak. He’s an accomplished actor and just completed an action heavy part in Netflix’s Bright so there’s no reason he shouldn’t be cast. Then again, any casting choice will probably go through heavy deliberation. With that in mind, a decision on who to place in the role will likely be kept secreted until the merging of comic universes draws nearer. When that happens, we can begin narrowing down the list of names. But until then, these are the best picks we’ve got.
