The departure of American Gods’ showrunners Michael Green and Bryan Fuller is already causing a ripple effect. The Los Angeles Times interviewed Gillian Anderson where she revealed she won’t be returning the show’s second season.
Anderson played Media, one of the new gods, wonderfully in the Starz production. While she only appeared in four episodes of the nine-episode first season, Anderson stole the show whenever she was on screen. She embodied several pop culture icons including Lucy Ricardo, David Bowie and Marilyn Monroe.
This is disappointing news and probably not the last of the changes that will be made to American Gods in the wake of Green and Fuller leaving the show. Kristen Chenoweth told Variety back in December that she was unsure if she would be returning as well.
Green and Fuller reportedly left after disagreements with the budget and production. Fans of American Gods are patiently waiting for news, but this is definitely not what they wanted to hear.

With it ensemble cast and visually appealing effects, it’s easy to see how the budget might have gotten a bit out of control on American Gods. However, that’s part of what made the show so great. The storytelling has been wonderful as it followed Shadow and Mr. Wednesday around the country, crossing paths with Mad Sweeny and Shadow’s dead wife, Laura.
The television shows added newer elements from the novel that made American Gods whole. The only disappointment was the huge cliffhanger that made Season 1 feel as though it was unfinished. Thankfully, we are getting a Season 2, but it may look vastly different than what we watched in the first season.
The second season of American Gods premieres on Starz later this year.
