It has been roughly a month since Netflix acquired the screening rights to the Riverdale spinoff, Sabrina. Based on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Netflix has finally cast its Sabrina Spellman, former Mad Men star Kiernan Shipka.

The two season order is due to hit Netflix towards the end of the year, which meant that casting had to be finalised pretty soon after that announcement. Much to the delight of myself and many others, Kiernan was announced to be starring as Sabrina Spellman on Rodrigo’s Twitter.

She has starred as the daughter of Jon Hamm and January Jones’ Don and Betty Draper on Mad Men through its entire run. As Sally Draper she was able to stand her own in the scenes she shared with Jon Hamm, and is clearly a very talented actress.

More from Netflix

Recently she stared in last years The Blackcoat’s Daughter, an indie horror movie that despite being little seen has garnered a lot of praise from critics and audiences who have seen it. A24 released it on VOD back in March 2017, so I recommend giving that a watch.

Rodrigo Aguirre-Sacasa’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, like I have discussed before, is a dark horror steeped in black magic and satanic imagery. Set in 1960’s Greendale the comic series is based on Sabrina learning to control her powers whilst becoming a teenager. The series also features the evil Madame Satan, who in the comics, is brought to this world by the naive Betty and Veronica.

How would this fit into the world of Riverdale that we have grown to love over the past year or so? Riverdale has played with some dark themes, and the show has played with the idea of the supernatural since the start. Remember when Jason Blossom came back from the dead to haunt Cheryl? Yes that was just a dream, but maybe it was there to set up Sabrina.

Oh, and I called this piece of casting back in April last year:

I for one am very, very excited for Sabrina, and with the casting of Kiernan Shipka as the titular character this looks to be headed in the right direction. Lets hope we see her pop up in Riverdale and our screens before the end of the year.
