Johnny Galecki hints that The Big Bang Theory Season 12 will be the last, while Young Sheldon Season 2 has been confirmed.

CBS previously announced that The Big Bang Theory Season 12 was a go. A show that many fans believed would end with Season 10 has got two extra years. But quite honestly, Season 12 is a good place for the series to end.

It does help that spin-off Young Sheldon is doing extremely well. After just one episode it was picked up for a full season and just recently secured an early renewal order. The prequel series focusing on 9-year-old Sheldon Cooper has drawn in new viewers with its fresh feel. Is this the reason The Big Bang Theory should come to an end? Well, partially, but there are many more reasons.

It’s run its course

There are only so many storylines you can cover with a series and short of divorce between characters and loss of children, The Big Bang Theory has done them all. For the last 10.5 years, we’ve watched the characters grow and develop. We’ve seen Penny move on from aspirations of being an actress to being a sensible young woman. Howard has gone from the sleezy pervert to a semi-respectable father. Out of all, of course, Sheldon has had some of the best character development.

The show really has run its course. It’s hard to see if there are any more storylines to cover, except for some that just will not go down well with fans. The comedy has shown that stable relationships don’t need to be boring and characters don’t need to constantly breakup and get back together (“we were on a break,” anyone?) to keep the humor.

The show is back on a high

The Big Bang Theory took a bit of a slump in the comedy from around Season 7. The last season picked it up to the point where it is now back on a high. Ending it soon will be the best way to allow it to go out with a bang (no pun intended!).

It’s always sad when a great show sizzles out. Seeing this comedy go out without flare would be disappointing. The show would go backwards if it continued for much longer.

The characters have evolved

As mentioned in the first point, each character has evolved. Even this season has seen Raj start to evolve. He’s fed up of feeling inferior and while the storyline was wrapped way too quickly, he realized just why his self-confidence has taken a dive. And Raj has certainly evolved from the guy who couldn’t even talk around women! Another season will give more time to fully evolve Raj the way the other characters have.

There will always be room for more evolving, but does there need to be any? The show is at a point where each character has got to a point of believability. They’re not perfect and that’s what makes them all so loveable.

A decade is a long time

Friends ended with the 10th season. While it was a sad time, it was also monumental. Fans saw the characters’ lives progress and change. They saw some move onto new experiences with joy and apprehension, with others wondering what they would do next. Considering The Big Bang Theory had a similar feel to Friends, it’s understandable that the two have been compared.

A decade is a long time to be on the screen; not just for fans but for the actors. As Galecki says, it’s time to go back home to their families. It’s time for all to move on and get out of the bubble that is the show. It’s time for them to have a life.

There’s chance to wrap the storylines

Advanced warning is best for a show that has been on the air for years. Fans become invested in their characters and they want to see how the stories end. There’s nothing worse than getting a situation like Army Wives or Witches of East End where all these future potential storylines are set up and then the networks decide not to renew.

CBS has the chance to give fans closure. Ending with The Big Bang Theory Season 12 does that. Fans know that the season is confirmed. The writers and showrunners can plan ahead to make sure all characters get the endings they deserve.
