Guardians of the Galaxy series director clarifies the significance of Kyln prison stripes. Design represents an offense.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 director James Gunn took to his Facebook to set the record straight. He pointed out a Reddit post at Movie Details that was partially correct when it came to the Kyln’s prison uniforms.

Redditor DasGannon was right about how the stripes designate an offense/conviction. However, he was wrong about the grey stripe on Rocket’s outfit which he claimed represented “indecent exposure.” After all, what’s there to expose on a talking raccoon?

New thread on Reddit claims that each of the stripes on the Guardians' legs in prison represents a crime. This IS true,…

In the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie trailer, Corpsman Dey reads off their rap sheet. The onscreen display even gives the number of offenses. For example, at the time of her incarceration, Gamora had 12 counts of murder “all at the behest of Thanos.” This runs in sync with Gunn’s Facebook post.

"“Gamora keeps things simple with her long list of murders and assassinations, all at the behest of Thanos.”"

Drax is shown in the trailer with an acronym designated by GBH which is “grevious bodily harm” as proven by the Guardians director. Drax had 22 counts of murder.

Rocket Raccoon shows some of his crimes in the trailer that also run in line with what Gunn stated.

"“Rocket’s are mercenary activity, grievous bodily harm, arson (he blows up a lot of stuff), escape from prison, and, I believe, public drunkenness.”"

Finally, Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord, has this presented in the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer rap sheet, “1 count sex crime: ‘Illegal manipulation of Gramosian Duchess’.”

James Gunn had a pretty good recall of this information considering it was from “the top of my head”.

"“Quill’s crimes are penny-ante robbery, grift, criminal conspiracy (from his gang involvement with the Ravagers), and having sex with members of a royal family (consensual but on some planets considered an outrageous crime for someone from his caste).”"

In case you’re wondering who the Gramosian Duchess is, the Guardians director clarified that back in 2012 via his Facebook page. People had been asking about her, according to SyFy. In fact, it was she that seduced Peter Quill. However, it’s illegal to fraternize with royalty if you’re of a different hierarchy. So it’s moot who made the first move.

Gunn goes on to explain how Groot was suppose to have a pair of prison pants. They lost the pants when the character decided to rip them off. These designs were accredited to the costume designer Alexandra Byrne. James does acknowledge how “deep the mythos can be.” If anyone can recall, he did mention obscure Easter eggs in both his movies.
