The Magicians recap: A magical quest
By Drew Koenig
The Magicians has returned with its third season and the promise of a thrilling quest.
As some of you may remember, The Magicians ended its second season with Quentin, Julia, Eliot, and Margo killing the power-hungry god Umber and thus saving the magical land of Fillory. Elsewhere, our favorite was poisoned with a case of Super Cancer and now has to work the Library. As a result of Umber’s death, Umber’s deific parents shut off all magic everywhere and that’s where this third season picks up.
By virtue of how the narrative has been set up for this premiere, the characters have been evenly divided into four sections of the show.
The first is Quentin and Julia, who are investigating how to get magic back and what the small spark of magic Julia still has means. The second is Penny and Kady, the former of whom is off being the errand boy for the Library, but also can’t leave the Library for too long or the cancer will progress normally in the real world and kill him and the latter is trying to find some way to fix him.
The third is Alice, who is trying desperately, and through less than reputable means of information gathering, to stay one step ahead of her enemies now that she’s human again and has left Quentin in a proverbial cloud of smoke.

The fourth, and arguably the most pivotal part of the series at the moment, are Eliot and Margo in Fillory who have been silently overtaken by the Fairies, led by the Fairy Queen, and are actively trying to find a way to get out of their thumb while also staving off the imminent collapse of their kingdom.
After many false starts against the Fairy Queen, Eliot seeks out the Great Cock (look, we’re all adults here) for a way to get the upper hand against the fairies. The Great Cock offers an alternative plan: A quest. Not just any quest, though. One that will let them reclaim magic.

The Great Cock tells Eliot that he will need all of his friends for this one: the one-eyed conqueror, the traveler, the warrior, the fool, the god-touched, the lover of tomatoes, and the torture artist are on their way.
The one-eyed conqueror obviously refers to Margo; the traveler is Penny; the warrior could either be Kady or Alice; the fool is probably Quentin; the god-touched is Julia; the lover of tomatoes could be Josh, he probably loves tomatoes; and the torture artist is most likely someone new or it could be Alice, depending how dark her niffin-self was.
Ultimately, this is pairing up to be a Dungeons-and-Dragons type season and, needless to say, we are here for it.

There are still a bunch of questions that the show is going to have to answer for this quest like: How is Penny going to help in the quest if he can’t leave the Library for very long? What is the structure of this quest going to look like? How are the Fillory and Earth-based characters going to help each other? Seriously, how is Penny going to help without him dying? Hopefully, these questions are answered by the next episode for the sake of the season’s pacing.
All-in-all, this is a good start and we’re intrigued to see where it goes from here.
