Netflix’s Nurse Ratched series will bring back Randle McMurphy for the fun

At the TCA press tour for American Crime Story: Assassination Of Gianni Versace, Ryan Murphy commented on his next project, Ratched. A prequel series to One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest which includes Jack Nicholson’s character, Randle McMurphy.

During the event, Ryan Murphy explained how Ratched will mostly follow Nurse Ratched. The series will take place well before Randle McMurphy arrives at the psychiatric hospital, focusing more on Sarah Ratched rather than McMurphy. According to creator, Ryan Murphy, the first four seasons of Ratched will follow Sarah’s journey to becoming the sadistic Nurse Ratched. While the final season will depict her battling it out with McMurphy, just like she did in the original story.

"Ryan Murphy: “The great thing about that show is the first four seasons follow Sarah’s origin story. How did she become a Hannibal Lecter figure? What happened to her to make her do that? It’s also a feminist tale because it starts in 1947. It really looks at the birth of a lot of things that were happening in our health care system. The last season of that show will be Sarah facing off against the Jack Nicholson character from the movie. It’ll let you understand how she became that person. We haven’t started casting the Nicholson part.”"

As far as casting goes, only one actor is attached to the Netflix based series: Sarah Paulson. She’ll be replacing Louise Fletcher as the titular nurse, Sarah Ratched. There’s no word on who’ll be cast as McMurphy or the rest of the mental patients in the facility but whoever they bring in to play McMurphy needs to bring their A-game. Jack Nicholson did such an excellent job in the 1978 film that it’s going to be difficult for anyone to compete. Hopefully, Ryan Murphy has someone spectacular in mind, because they’re going to have to be.

The other aspect of casting we need to consider is whether or not Jack Nicholson will cameo at some point. Ratched has yet to set a filming date so there’s plenty of time for Ryan Murphy to convince Nicholson to return. If he does agree to, Nicholson obviously won’t play McMurphy. Nicholson is just too old. However, he’d be perfect as one of the doctors within the psychiatric facility. Of course, Nicholson would probably bring his brand of crazy to the role, making him the somewhat oddball physician within the facility. Or, perhaps Nicholson will simply play a new patient in the facility. Either way, Nicholson should have a part in Netflix’s Ratched regardless.

For now, that’s all the information we have to go off of. Until Ryan Murphy or Netflix provide us with an update on Ratched, we can only speculate on what they have in store. Though, the biggest question we have is who’ll be cast to replace Nicholson as Randle McMurphy? My vote is for Alexander Skarsgard. He’s got the acting chops for the role. It’s just a matter of convincing Skarsgard to fill the part.

Nurse Ratched‘s release date is TBA.
