Conflicts between the Underground, Sentinel Services, Trask, the Hounds, and humans lead to consequences for all parties, including divisions within HQ itself in the season 1 finale of The Gifted.

The 2-hour season finale of The Gifted did not disappoint audiences, but many characters were left feeling disappointed by the turn of events both in and out of the Underground. Keeping up the pattern of opening flashbacks, we’re taken to Dr. Campbell’s home four years ago where we see his brother dying of cystic fibrosis. Dr. Campbell leaves him to go to work, where he’s lecturing in a hall about the extinction of Neanderthal people, comparing it to humans’ ability to work together to fight against powerful genetic mutations.

In present day, the Frost sisters are persuading the mutants to ambush the Humanity Today summit, a convention for human elitists, in order to kidnap Campbell. They reluctantly agree, but once the plan has been set, John goes to Reed privately in hopes to retrieve some of Otto’s research about the Hound Program… and Campbell knows that specific research has gone missing as well.

John walks away but is approached by Clarice, who opens up about how she had worked with the Brotherhood before she was found by the police. He hears her out, but feels betrayed that she kept her past hidden from him.

In the vault, Andy studies a book written by humans about his grandfather and great aunt Von Strucker, learning they had been planning to create a building to support mutants. Lauren brushes him off and reminds him that they were killers, whereas the Underground is determined to help people. Andy brings up the Frost sisters, and Lauren realizes that the women have gotten into his head. She calls them liars, but Andy’s starting to side with the triplets, and  the two of them are divided on the matter.

In HQ, Sage and Reed are looking into Otto’s research about the X-gene and realize that Trask is after it too. Caitlin notices that one of the companies where Trask is planning to search is where Reed’s mother works. They drop everything and set out with Lauren and Andy to find her.
