In this age of reboots, it should come to no surprise that a cult classic is now in talks for a revival. Will Mighty Ducks really make their way to TV?

Get those skates sharpened and get working on that flying-V because The Mighty Ducks might be coming back. The 90’s beloved Disney trilogy follows a young hockey team full of outcasts and underdogs but they always manage to stick together when faced with challenges on and off the ice. The films most notably starred Emilio Estevez as Coach Gordon Bombay and Joshua Jackson as Charlie Conway. Although not critically received, the films became cult classics with kids growing up in the ’90s. Now it looks like the Ducks will be back, at least in some capacity.

The Hollywood Reporter has shared the news that a Mighty Ducks TV series is officially in the works at ABC Signature Studios.

Who is involved with the Mighty Ducks revival?

The original screenwriter and producer of the trilogy – Steven Brill and Jordan Kerner – reportedly reached out to the studio about a small screen revival. The plan is to create a script so that the studio can work on a cast before shopping it to networks. Brill and Kerner’s involvement bodes well for the project as they were the minds behind the initial storyline and can once again emulate the tone from the movies. This doesn’t feel like a cash grab revival but more of chance to travel back to a cult favorite.

There is no word if any of the original cast is involved with the project but fans shouldn’t be surprised if there is some original character involvement, or at least a few cameos. It will also depend if the series would be a sequel or reboot, the details have not been shared. The cast behind the trilogy are well aware of the lasting impact the movie had. It also influenced a new generation of kids in becoming interested in the sport of hockey. The success of the films even led to an NHL team being named after the team (the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim would later be renamed the Anaheim Ducks). The cast even reunited for the initial film’s 20th anniversary to recreate the iconic flying-V.

So what chance does the show have in even being made?

Seeing as how the trend for revivals in film and TV has yet to slow down, there is no reason to believe this project to quickly fall through. Whether you love it or hate it, beloved franchises are no longer untouchable. Due to the recent success of TV reboots, the news of planned revivals across a multitude of genres have been the buzz of the entertainment world as of late. The Mighty Ducks situation is a tad different considering it was a film franchise making a transition to TV. Some fans may forget that the Mighty Ducks are no stranger to the small-screen after the movies spawned an animated series. The series only ran one season in 1996 so here’s hoping a new TV show has more success.

The possibility of the series definitely looks bright considering how many networks they can shop to. Whether they go in-house with ABC or try at a streaming service, there is no shortage of networks to house the series. Now it all depends on the script capability and the vision for next generation of Ducks. The sources want to ensure the public that the project is in very early stages of development and there is a chance it might not even make its way to the screen.
