Have you ever wanted to attend Hogwarts? JamCity and Portkey Games are making dreams come true with their new mobile game, Hogwarts Mystery, and we got a first-look at Celebration of Harry Potter!

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment brought the Hogwarts Mystery game came to A Celebration of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort this weekend to treat Harry Potter superfans to a preview of the mobile gaming experience. The booth, which was decorated as The Great Hall, supplied each new student with their acceptance letter to Hogwarts, a house-themed notebook, and a tablet that featured a scene from the new game to explore.

Hogwarts Mystery allows players to go into the world of Harry Potter for the first time as a witch or wizard. Set years before Harry, Ron and Hermione arrive at the wizarding school, you’ll be playing the game along with Nymphadora Tonks and Charlie Weasley, both of whom are in your year.

You’ll board the train to Hogwarts, stand with other first-years as Professor McGonagall calls your name to be sorted by the Sorting Hat (don’t worry, you can tell the sorting hat which house you’re hoping for), and make friends with other students as you find your way to classes across the castle grounds.

We spoke with one of Hogwarts Mystery’s developers, Andrew Green, to learn more about the first-person mobile game and uncover what the experience will be like for wizards, witches and muggles alike! Green explained that every player will move through Years 1-7 as they play, but the game doesn’t have a definitive ending. “The goal is to become the witch or wizard that you want to be and fulfill your own destiny as a student,” he said. Each player’s experience will be unique to them, and there’s even a detailed wardrobe creator for you to design your avatar exactly how you’d dress as a Hogwarts student.

The first “mystery” of Hogwarts Mystery:

So what exactly will you be doing as a Hogwarts student in the game? Green assured us that you’ll be on the epic adventure of your choosing. “There are tons of quests: tons of friend quests, tons of side quests, and then a lot of main mysteries,” he explained. However the title of the game is referring to one mystery specifically, and it involves your family. “As you’re starting your journey at Hogwarts, you find out that your brother has gone missing mysteriously. He was a very beloved student at Hogwarts and no one knows what happened to him. That’s just one mystery of many — obviously Hogwarts is a very mysterious place.”

When the game was first announced, it caused a buzz instantly with fans worldwide. “I think it’s going to be a huge hit for a few reasons, but [mainly because] this is the main fantasy that many Harry Potter fans have always had, which is to make their own character in an official product so that they can actually go to school and make decisions as they see fit.”

One of the developers’ priorities is make the game as accessible as possible, which is why they’ve chosen a mobile platform. “Mobile is a really ubiquitous, casual gaming platform, as opposed to say console or PC where only a specific set of people could play,” Green said. “We wanted to make a game that was really intuitive and easy to use so that you could access this world and have your own Hogwarts fun.”
