The Orville: The best first season Alara moments

Xelayan Lieutenant and Chief of Security Alara Kitan (Halston Sage) is simultaneously the toughest member aboard The Orville and perhaps the most vulnerable.

Alara is a wonderful character because she packs amazing power in petite frame. As the saying goes, good things come in small packages. Her home planet of Xelaya has higher gravity, and she has incredible strength as a result. Of course, that’s a bit intimidating on the dating scene. Additionally, she has serious self-confidence issues about her ability on the ship.

Here are the top five moments from Alara in The Orville’s first season.

Alara conquers her inner demons.

The “Firestorm” episode was amazing for the development of Alara’s character. She showed incredible fortitude and strength conquering her fears, and took a hit from clowns more terrifying than anything on American Horror Story. More impressive, however, is the fact she overcame childhood fire trauma to invoke Protocol 38, giving her complete jurisdiction over The Orville as Head of Security. It was a big risk, and took serious guts on her part.

Ding! Ding!

Alara is bad, and apparently enjoys boxing. Her preferred method to blow off steam. So challenging Bortus (Peter Macon) to an exhibition match was already a mismatch before even factoring in her immense strength. She proves Xelayan’s can take a punch, completely dismissing the four punch combo from her muscle-bound foe.

Maybe Bortus can challenge her to an eating contest since his comments about Moclan females were misconstrued to include all females of every species. I’m certain he wins the rematch via first round KO.

“Old Wounds” established Alara’s niche.

Alara saved the crew from Krill warriors by breaking down a concrete wall and allowing a Union getaway. That was the first time her powers and handiwork were seen, and it became a theme throughout the season. Whenever Captain Mercer (MacFarlane) needed a particularly difficult door opened, in stepped Alara like in “Old Wounds.”

Alara bends the rules.

Alara knows how to handle tense scenarios and leadership situations. But it doesn’t hurt to have a shot of Xelayan tequila every now and then to calm the nerves, as she proves on “Command Performance.” Along with her prolific dating, using the food synthesizers for other than approved methods proves Alara is capable of being the life of the party and bending the rules a bit. She may just be the strongest AND most fun member of The Orville.

The Chief of Security wears many hats.

Aside from normal duties, Alara must also be part-time exterminator and housekeeper. After all, someone has to figure out which room a guest should get when there is a leftover hamster smell.
