Earlier today, 20th Century Fox unveiled a new trailer for Deadpool 2. In the trailer, a first look at Cable in action was revealed, along with a possible glimpse at X-Force.

More from FOX

In case you haven’t caught a glimpse at the latest Deadpool 2 trailer, it’s something every fan of the X-Men franchise needs to see. Most fans assume the trailer merely introduces Cable but it does much more. The trailer also offers up a more in-depth look at the plot of Deadpool 2.

Up until recently, not much was known about the plot. The only thing we knew with certainty was that some level of time travel would be involved. Now, however, we know a bit more about what’s going to play out. The thing is, all that information can only be deduced from what we were shown in the latest trailer. In lieu of that, we’ve broken down the significance of everything worth mentioning in the “Meet Cable” trailer.

Nod to Disney’s Toy Story movie?

In the beginning sequence of “Meet Cable”, Wade Wilson begins playing with a Cable figurine. Wade then brings out a Deadpool toy dressed up in a cowboy outfit. And it’s not just any cowboy outfit. The Deadpool toy is dressed in an outfit identical to that of Woody from Toy Story. After this, Wade starts conducting some imaginary play with the toys and lays down one-liners from the original Toy Story movie.

When Wade is done playing with them, the toys are laid on their sides to show the camera that Wade’s name is imprinted on the bottom of the toys. The reason Wade’s name is significant is because Andy, the main character in Toy Story, also wrote his name on the bottom of all of his toys.

Now, these nods to Toy Story may have just been done for pure fun but there’s a chance that it has something to do with Disney and Fox’s recent merger. With the two studios now working together, using a Toy Story reference in a Deadpool 2 trailer could be connected. This could inevitably lead to more Disney references being used in X-Men movies.

Looks like there’ll be two versions of Wade Wilson in Deadpool 2

One of the more briefer shots in “Meet Cable” depicts a sickly Wade Wilson inside a mutant prison. The accompanying inmates brandishing mutant-inhibitor collars are evidence of where this takes place. But the reason we know this sickly Deadpool is a different version of the Merc with a Mouth is because scenes involving the deteriorating Wade Wilson take place in Cable’s post-apocalyptic future. Shots featuring Cable in the same prison provide further evidence of a sick Wade Wilson being part of his future. Although, we don’t know if this future will be changed or not.

The DMC is responsible for capturing mutants and using them as weapons

At the moment, we don’t know what the DMC is. But considering that the insignia is branded on to a group of soldiers’ shields, as well as an armored truck, they’re definitely the ones responsible for running the apocalyptic future that Cable is from. Also, the “Meet Cable” shows us that the DMC is controlling mutants with inhibitor collars. These collars also seem to function as control devices, evidenced by the mutants in prison jumpsuits fighting Deadpool himself. Another brief shot of the mutant prisoners with glowing red eyes backs up claims of mind-controlled mutants being part of Deadpool 2’s plot.

Deadpool 2 takes a jab at Henry Cavill’s mustache in Justice League

For anyone who didn’t hear about the controversy surrounding Cavill’s mustache, it all came up because of the digital effects added to Cavill on-screen. And it wasn’t because CGI placed on Cavill added something unnecessary but rather removed something insignificant.

With Warner Brothers set on keeping Cavill mustache-less, the studio used CGI to make sure it didn’t show up on-screen. Even though that aspect of Cavill’s appearance was insignificant, Warner Brothers made a huge deal out of it. And fans weren’t pleased with the illogical approach taken by the studio.

To poke fun at that bit of CGI mishap, Wade Wilson can be heard comparing the unfinished image of Cable (Josh Brolin) to digitally removing a mustache in the “Meet Cable” trailer. While Wade (Ryan Reynolds) doesn’t mention Cavill, Superman, or Justice League by name, we all know who he was referencing.

Does Wade Wilson have to patch up his suit?

In another of the more peculiar shots, Wade Wilson is in a slightly different costume. It’s appearance isn’t much different from the suit Wade made in Deadpool, but the patched up spots on the suit are indicative of some wear and tear. Enough so that Wade was forced to use metal pieces to close up the gaps. However, the patched up Deadpool suit could belong to the Wade of the future.

Assuming future Deadpool escapes the mutant prison he’s in, Wade might find his suit ripped up. So to make it usable, attaching metal scraps to rips and tears could be necessary. Of course, the metal attachments could also be indicative of Wade being infected with the Technovore virus—the same virus that has infected Cable.

X-Force assmbled?

Probably the most intriguing shot out of the entire Cable trailer is the shot of Deadpool aboard a plane. He’s accompanied by Domino and a few other companions. There’s no telling who they are, but their unique costumes give us the impression that these characters are Deadpool’s mutant comrades.

For instance, the soldier standing behind Deadpool is in all white. If he is associated with X-Force, that could be Fox’s version of Fantomex a.k.a. Charlie Cluster. The actor playing Fantomex can’t be identified from this angle but he’s probably one of the bigger names attached to the film.

The other X-Force member who could be joining Deadpool’s brigade is Tike Alicar a.k.a. Anarchist. He doesn’t have any discernible attributes that tell us he’s Anarchist but the African-American individual standing next to Deadpool is bald and wearing a pair of sunglasses seen in most incarnations of Alicar. The actor playing this character isn’t listed on Deadpool 2’s IMDB page, so we can’t confirm who he is.

The final character who may be part of Deadpool’s X-Force squad is Axel Culney a.k.a. Zeitgeist. A character who resembles Zeitgeist can be seen standing behind Domino (Zazie Beetz). The mouth-guard he’s wearing is the biggest piece of evidence tying this unnamed actor to Zeitgeist.

In the comics, Zeitgeist spews corrosive material from his mouth, so a protective plate is necessary for him to wear. The man standing behind Domino also wearing one seems to tie him to the part. Of course, he could be playing a completely different character.

Another tease of Hope Summers

The final shot that stuck out in the “Meet Cable” trailer was the close-up of a teddy bear tied to Cable’s waistband. Anyone familiar with Cable’s comic history knows that the bear belongs to his daughter, Hope Summers. So, the image of Hope’s bear with Cable probably means she’s in the film. However, the charred ends on the toy bear do seem to tell us that it was caught in a fire or explosion. An explosion that Hope could’ve been caught in. Her death would explain why Cable is carrying it, and would also give reason to Cable’s purpose in the past. Therefore, Hope could already be dead in Deadpool 2—that is until Cable goes back to change the past.
