By now, most of us know that the sad time has finally come when Hugh Jackman, the man we’ve gotten used to seeing as Wolverine in the X-Men universe, has decided to step away from the role.

It was a great ending for Jackman’s Wolverine. His final movie, Logan, has garnered three nominations from the Academy Awards, in addition to recognition outside the Academy, per IMDb. But all this begs the question — who in the world could replace the iconic actor who has absolutely owned the Wolverine ever since his first appearance with adamantium claws in the year 2000?

It’s a tall task (to say the least), but I believe that there are three actors, in particular, who could pull it off.

To select these three, I thought that the factors below had to be considered:

1. Size: He has to have the ability to bulk up to that size that makes the Wolverine a menacing intimidator, while still being able to have the athleticism that makes him quick on his feet.

2. Look: He has to have a certain lumberjack-type look that says, “hey, I’m a beast… don’t mess with me.”

3. Facial features:  Hugh Jackman had the perfect face to play the Wolverine. When he snarled or yelled, there was an intensity to his face that just jumped out of the screen.

For the new Wolverine to truly replace Jackman, he will need to have a similar type of onscreen presence. So without further ado, here are the three actors I believe could be up to the task…

1. Gerard Butler

If he’s not a Wolverine candidate, I don’t know who is. The actor would be perfect as the clawed-Canadian. All of the boxes are checked with him, and who wouldn’t enjoy seeing the former 300 star tearing it up with the X-Men?

2. Bradley Cooper

Another great actor, Bradley Cooper has all the qualities one could hope to find in the search for the new Wolverine. The American Sniper star just might be one of the best choices to take over the role in the future due to his versatility and fitting appearance.

3. Sullivan Stapleton

The Blindspot actor would fit the role of Wolverine as well as anyone. Simply put, this man would be perfect for the job. His ability to play the tough character should make him one of the top candidates to replace Jackman in the coming years.

Next: Consider this: A Spider-Man appearance in Marvel's Netflix universe.

Jackman deciding to hang up his claws is unfortunate, as he has only become more and more impressive throughout the years in his marquee role. On the bright side, though, there remains a chance that we haven’t seen the last of him as Wolverine, as he has openly teased the idea of reprising the role if the opportunity to do so alongside The Avengers, comes up. Hopefully, that becomes a reality.

If this doesn’t come to fruition, we will be looking at seeing an eventual replacement for the long-time Wolverine actor. Think it will be one of the above three? Or somebody else?

Who do you think should replace Hugh Jackman as Wolverine?
