As a matter of fact, Beth and Randall are the superior couple on This Is Us

This Is Us showcases many different kinds of love, but of its handful of focal romantic relationships, Beth and Randall are simply the best.

You know Beth and Randall Pearson. They are one of the many true examples of timeless, unconditional love on This Is Us. From parents to partners to the perfectly imperfect rock that keeps the other stable, Beth and Randall have it all figured out even when they don’t have anything figured out. I’d go so far as to call them #relationshipgoals and the couple superior to the rest on This Is Us. Here’s why.

Before you jump down my throat, yes, Jack and Rebecca are the blueprint upon which many couples will chart their marriages. Surely, Randall uses lessons learned from his father in his own marriage. There’s no discounting that the love shared between Jack and Rebecca and the love they provided for their children cannot be beat… except by Beth and Randall, who is the sole television couple that you’ll never have to fear will suffer a separation arc.

Apart from Beth and Randall just being the absolute cutest (#tbt to Randall calling Beth “the chocolate sauce on my ice cream”), This Is Us handles them with the utmost care. They aren’t stereotypes in either direction and they don’t misrepresent their race or, on a micro level, the companionship fostered between a long-time loving duo. They are each other’s biggest fan and kindest critic, the wisest combination for fulfillment.

More from This Is Us

Of course, Beth and Randall aren’t without their struggles. Season 2 found the couple’s marriage tested more than it had ever been in the first season when pursuing the prospect of expanding their family. Randall proposed adoption, Beth proposed fostering. In compromising with a middle ground, they pushed and pulled, but there’s no disagreement that could threaten to tear down the beautiful life they have built.

Again, Season 2 mixed up their dynamic with Beth heading back to work full time and Randall staying home with the girls. When Randall’s contentedness to remain out of work wore on Beth, she threw subtle barbs before ripping off the bandage of honesty. Even if it hurts, Beth and Randall will always cut the crap, call marriage, and get to the heart of the matter. Because they value the power of direct communication rather the slow combustion of bottled up emotions.

I’m not saying that the other Pearson couples don’t possess these qualities. Kate and Toby, Jack and Rebecca, William and Jessie, and even Kevin and Sophie have at one time or another fired on all cylinders. This Is Us tells a love story for every viewer to relate to and connect with, and all of these love stories have a universality that can’t be minimized. However, I hold a slightly more special place for Beth and Randall in my heart.

What I love best about this particular pairing is that they’re at once a single person and two separate individuals. They are “Beth and Randall,” but they complement each other more than they complete each other, something I think people frequently forget in the flame of relationships. You don’t want to lose yourself in your partner; Beth and Randall haven’t. Despite their supposedly perfect imperfections, I say they are just plain perfect.
