The Originals may be coming to an end, but Julie Plec is staying with The CW. She’s confirmed as part of the network’s second planned reboot of 2018-2019, Roswell.

While the Charmed reboot has stolen most of the news, there’s another one being penned for The CW. The network is hoping to hit the mark with a Roswell reboot and now it has a confirmed director for the pilot episode, along with an executive producer. Julie Plec, best known for The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, will remain with the youth network.

There certainly will be a connection to the original series, but that’s not the important thing right now. Plec being pulled into the series could be the perfect thing for this reboot. Here are five reasons for that.

More from CW

#1. She has fantasy experience

Plec has already had two successful shows on The CW. Her first was The Vampire Diaries, which then translated into the spin-off, The Originals. She has started to become the CW’s answer to NBC’s Dick Wolf and ABC’s Shonda Rhimes.

While the Roswell reboot will likely involve science fiction, it is primarily a fantasy show. There’s also a personal romance element to the series. Plec certainly has experience in handling the two together, especially when it comes to mixing the natural with the supernatural in the same relationship.

#2. She’s developed adaptations before

The Vampire Diaries was an adaptation of a book. However, the series was nothing like the book version, purely taking character names and basic relationships and turning them on their head. The only main similarity was the relationship between Elena and the Salvatores and the addition of Katherine as Elena’s doppelganger.

Plec made the series her own and did it successfully. It even went into a spin-off based on a character who was a minor villain in the book series, showing her creativity skills and working closely with her team. This hints at her ability to turn the original Roswell into a brand new reboot that will work for the majority of fans.

#3. There another The Originals crew member

Plec isn’t the only The Originals mastermind coming to the series. Writer Carina Adly MacKenzie is the named Executive Producer for the series. Having a pre-existing working relationship on a successful show will help to get the project off to a good start. There is little need for the two to get used to each other.

Many may worry that Plec will find it harder to take direction from a producer, but this isn’t the case. Just recently, Plec directed an episode of Riverdale, which she has no top involvement in. It’s another CW fantasy-drama show, based on other source material. Yet again, she shows her ability to do the task at hand, working within a successful show and adapting her skills for her position.

#5. She’s worked with The CW a lot

Yes, already mentioned but it is a point in itself. Plec already has a working relationship with The CW. She knows Mark Pedowitz and has experience in negotiating with him. She’ll have a working relationship with the board members and know what it takes to get a series green-lit.

Having this relationship will also mean she knows what it takes to make a show survive. While she’s had successful shows, she was also the EP for Containment, which flopped after a season. This will give her an idea of what The CW wants to see in terms of ratings and will have that inside knowledge to help the Roswell reboot succeed.

Plec could be the best thing for the Roswell reboot. She could help this series succeed in ways that some of her previous shows have.
