Every time a new James Bond movie starts development, Christopher Nolan’s name is always the first to appear as a possible person to direct. Well, the famous James Bond will have to wait, because Chris Nolan has announced he will not be directing.
The news comes from Digital-Spy who reports that Nolan did an interview with BBC Radio 4 where Nolan says, “I’d love to make a Bond film at some point and I think those producers – Barbara and Michael – they do a tremendous job and Sam Mendes has done a terrific job the last couple of films, so they don’t particularly need me.”
While this may disappoint fans of Nolan, there are plenty of directors out there who are worthy of the mantle. Here are just a few that might be worth considering:
David Leitch
Known for such films such as John Wick, Atomic Blonde, and soon Deadpool 2, director David Leitch has an eye for action that is unmatched. He might not have the career pedigree of Sam Mendes, but Leitch did stunt work long before he went behind the camera. Add his experience with espionage in Atomic Blonde and this makes for a solid choice for helming James Bond.
Patty Jenkins
We all know Jenkins after her much deserved success from Wonder Woman. That film showed her skillset in balancing a romance-drama with action-spectacle. Spectre had mixed reactions in regards to its central love story, and if the film continues where the last film left off, then Jenkins would be a worthy pick to salvage the pieces. At the moment, Patty Jenkins is hard at work on Wonder Woman 2, but with DC’s Universe currently hanging by a thread, maybe she can make time for some old-fashioned spy stuff.
Kathryn Bigelow
This pick is a long shot, but anything is possible. Kathryn Bigelow has a strong career that is impressive beyond measure. She blew everyone away in the 90’s with the classic film Point Break. In the mid-2000s she jump-started her career again with the Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker. There’s no reason she can’t take the reins of Bond and make an ambitious swan-song for Daniel Craig. She is one of the best directors working today, and I can see Bigelow knocking it out of the park.
Ryan Coogler
This is also a long shot, but a worthy one to consider. Ryan Coogler clearly had some James Bond influences in Black Panther. His new film is a massive hit, and he has proven himself as a solid blockbuster director. While this would be a fun pick, I have to admit I would love to see Ryan Coogler reboot the series with Idris Elba, instead of Daniel Craig.
David Fincher
This one is more wishful thinking, however, Daniel Craig did an amazing job working with Fincher on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Part of me wonders what a grounded Fincher-esque take on Bond would look like. Combining these ingredients could make for the most inventive James Bond film in years. This could also be the first rated-R James Bond if David Fincher were to take the project. This will most likely never happen but it’s fun to think about the endless possibilities of such a team-up.
