The Cloverfield Paradox almost had other crossover sequences

The Cloverfield Paradox tied the film series together, but J.J. Abrams intended on using other easter eggs to connect to 10 Cloverfield Lane.

For those of you who have already seen The Cloverfield Paradox, the multiverse concept has had a little time to be digested and now and the original film’s director has opened up about where he would have liked to go with TCP. We already spotted scenes like Howard Stambler’s neighbor from 10CL appearing as a reporter in the third film, or Mark Stambler which was an obvious nod to John Goodman’s character Howard. Abrams tells The Empire Film Podcast:
"During the spacewalk sequence and all this debris is flying around, there was a truck that was going around. And it was from 10 Cloverfield Lane, it was Stambler’s truck. But it was one of those things that once again, it was just, some people called it out as being too crazy. I loved it, because I just thought it was so bonkers, but some people felt it was too distracting. I thought it was amazing."
What would have been an even better crossover is the inclusion of Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s character Michelle from 10CL making a cameo – the kick ass heroine of the second film that received universal praise. Abrams has recently stated his idea during the Facebook Q&A where he elaborated:
"“We’ve talked about versions of things. When we did 10 Cloverfield Lane, we were thinking Michelle – the character Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays – it’s such a sort of weird origin story of this kind of incredibly, I think, awesome heroine. The idea of following her story is really cool. And then at one point, we were like, ‘You know what would be really cool? What if they crossed paths with Gugu [Mbatha-Raw]’s character Ava?’ You start to think of ‘what ifs,’ and I think the bigger ideas that we’ve had about where this thing goes haven’t necessarily been those ideas, but they’ve kind of been fun theoretical offshoots.”"
It certainly could have been a great way to bring things together even more, or my long running hope of seeing someone like Rob or Lily from the first Cloverfield – but with endless possibilities, who knows what future films could hold for us. Would you have liked to see Winstead appear in The Cloverfield Paradox?
