Celebrity Big Brother finale: Did the right person win?

Celebrity Big Brother has already wrapped up, but many are still left wondering if the right choice was made.

The inaugural season of Celebrity Big Brother proved to be a successful venture, giving audiences an intimate look at some beloved celebrities while still staying true to the Big Brother game. Some would argue, however, that the celebrity aspect did become a deterrent to the game.

When it was announced that Marissa Janet Winokur defeated Ross Matthews to win Celebrity Big Brother, fans went berserk with their unhappy reactions. Many thought that Ross’ strategic game and consistent winning of crucial challenges made him the best candidate to win. Admittedly, I am mixed on who should have won, especially because my pick James went home only a few episodes before.

While I certainly understand Ross losing, Marissa winning Celebrity Big Brother is a little suspect. Many credited her for playing a more honest game than Ross, but she essentially just followed Ross’ orders on a consistent basis. There is something to be said for someone who is a good pawn, but she did not even do that right when she betrayed members of the house like Shannon.

I also questioned Marissa’s pick for Ross to go to the finals. If Ross had proven himself to be the biggest competitor in the house, then why pick him to be your competitor for the finals? That was a bad strategy move, especially when Mark McGrath proved himself all season to be the perfect pawn for such an instance.

Candidly speaking, Ross lost Celebrity Big Brother because he played the game too aggressively. Credit is certainly due for how he was able to consistently take himself off the block and avoid elimination, but he did so by leaving most the celebrities with a sour taste in their mouth. Celebrities are some of the most vindictive people around, so it’s not really a surprise that they considered their personal vendetta win making their pick.

For me, at least, I thought Ariadna Gutierrez was the most deserving of the final four to win. Not only did she play a clean game, but she also was incredibly likable and a fierce competitor. I think no matter who she would’ve competed against for the final two, she would have been victorious.

Any way you slice it, this season of Celebrity Big Brother was a blast to watch, and I am surely excited to see the next iteration of the show sometime soon.
