Just how is Asmodeus so powerful on Supernatural?

Lucifer made a point in saying early in Supernatural Season 13 that Asmodeus’ powers aren’t all ones he gave. He certainly has more powers than other Princes of Hell have shown, but just how is that possible?

Asmodeus has all the powers of a Prince of Hell on Supernatural Season 13. However, Lucifer also pointed out that there are more. We’ve seen his shape shift, change his voice while in his own form, and overpower an archangel (or two). Just how is he so powerful?

SPN Hunters has already looked into one theory. It’s certainly possible that the powers come from a certain tricky archangel, but then that means he has somehow stolen an angel’s powers or grace. That means he would have another power on top of the ones we’ve seen. So, just what could be happening?

He’s stolen various powers over the years

Asmodeus seems to have been in hiding over the years, but not out of fear. While Ramiel and Dagon seemed to keep themselves out of the way until a time that suited them, Asmodeus was planning something bigger. He wanted more from Lucifer and wanted to sit in the throne. In the second episode he made it clear that he wanted to release the Shedim.

It would make sense that he’s spent this time growing his power base. He could have used methods to steal other demon’s powers, such as absorbing the powers of a shape shifter or stealing the graces of other angels.

This wouldn’t necessarily need special powers to start with. He could have found items to help him grow his power base. Considering how he seems one step ahead of everyone else, it would make sense that he’s been like this from the beginning; years before we’ve seen him on the series.

If you’ve read any real lore about Asmodeus, you’ll know that this is a demon who seeks out special artifacts. That’s become clear with the archangel blade, but it also makes sense that he’s done it in the past for his powers.

He could be an angel

In the Bible, Asmodeus is a demon that can disguise himself as an angel of light. What if it’s actually the other way around? What if Asmodeus is actually an angel that can disguise himself as a demon? This doesn’t quite make sense considering the canon created about Princes of Hell, so it’s possible that Asmodeus isn’t actually the demon Lucifer created.

Could Asmodeus actually be a rogue angel; one who wants to take over Hell and knows the best way is to pretend to be one of the Princes of Hell. This would certainly explain his preference for white instead of black (since all Supernatural demons need to dress in black now for some reason). If Asmodeus is an angel, it wouldn’t be that surprising that he could steal Gabriel’s powers—he’d just steal the grace.

Asmodeus is a tricky character to figure out, because he hasn’t been shown on the screen that much. There are so many ways that he could have gained the powers, but most of them are focused on stealing from someone or something. This would mean gaining that power to steal, which suggests he’s used artifacts or other lore to become so powerful.
