Now that Joss Whedon has stepped aside from helming the Batgirl movie, who should step into the creative chair?

More from DC Movies

Fans were somewhat divided over the original announcement that Whedon would write and direct a Batgirl movie when the news first came out a few months ago. Recently, he has stepped down saying that he basically didn’t really have a story in mind. Now tons of writers are throwing their hats into the ring.

With the success of Wonder Woman helmed by Patty Jenkins, a lot of people are clamoring for a female director or at least writer for the female superhero DC project.

Roxane Gay is a professor and professional writer that does have some comic book experience.
She co-wrote a Black Panther spin-off series with Ta-nehisi Coates.

Hope Larson and Gail Simone are both comic writing pros, with a lot of experience under their belt. They both have written for the solo Batgirl series and Simone has also written the character in Birds of Prey.

The only unbesmirched success DC has had lately was Wonder Woman. Solo films led by women might be DC’s greatest strength at this point, so it would not hurt to take this film seriously. I mean Batman and the Bat-family are a very popular property and a well done Batgirl film could one day link to future films. From this you could branch off with a Birds of Prey movie or even just have it connect to a Harley Quinn solo movie.

Next: Justice League: At this point, just pick a direction and stick with it

A solid portion of Wonder Woman was written by Geoff Johns, a long time  and well-known comic book writer. It is not the craziest idea to hand over this project another well established comic writer such as Simone or Larson. I’m not saying a woman has to direct or write the project. I’m sure there are lots of people who could do a good job, but why not hand the reigns over to a talented woman? Combine all this fervent writing skill with strong marketing and it just makes sense to attach talented female creators to Batgirl.
