After the surprise success of Wreck-It Ralph back in 2012, hopes are high for the sequel, Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2. Due to be released Thanksgiving this year, Disney has finally released the first trailer.

Wreck-It Ralph is one of the best video game movies of all time. Albeit a low bar to clear, it soared above everyone’s expectations with its quippy dialogue, heartwarming characters, loving references, and heartwarming story. When Disney announced that a sequel was to be made, everyone held their breath, hoping that it keeps the spirit of the first one. Rest assured, based on the evidence of this first trailer, this looks to be headed in the right direction.

Here is the official synopsis:

Video game bad guy Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sara Silverman) must risk it all by traveling to the world wide web in search of a replacement part of save Vanellope’s video game, Sugar Rush. In way over their heads, Ralph and Vanellope rely on the citizens of the internet – the netizens – to help navigate their way, including a website entrepreneur named Yesss (voice of Taraji P. Henson), who is the head algorithm and the heart and soul of trend-making site “BuzzzTube.”"

Capturing the colorful aesthetic of the first one perfectly, it looks to be a delight to see Ralph and Vanellope delve into the deep, deep world of the internet. The plot synopsis casts a wide net (pun not intended) over what ideas could be tackled. Much like the first one which touched on the ideas of appearances can be deceiving, to try your best, and own your individuality, Wreck-It Ralph 2 has many avenues to explore.

One thing that caught my eye, there is an underlying darkness about feeding a bunny pancakes until it explodes, traumatising the onlooking child. That, along with the eBay auction, could mean that it could satirize everything we know and love (and hate) about the internet, whilst touching on its dark places. Maybe, that is just a theory. It could just end up being about marshmallows, sugary sweets, and catchy pop songs. With cat gifs, lots and lots of cat gifs.

We will wait and see what Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 brings us at Thanksgiving.
