Even though we don’t really know what Gambi is up to, there is one thing that people don’t doubt on Black Lightning. He cares for Jefferson and his family. We witnessed that in his dealings with Lady Eve when he reminded her of the promises they made to leave the Pierce family alone.

So when Gambi continued to warn Jeff about staying away from Tobias Whale, it came from two different places – his shady promise to Lady Eve, but he was also looking out for Jefferson’s soul. Gambi is complicated like most people are.

However, Black Lightning should have listened to Gambi’s warnings because Jeff’s interference has caused a number of repercussions, some of which has put his life and his family’s at risk.

With Black Lightning’s reemergence, Tobias has targeted him – and vice versa. But now Tobias has used Black Lightning as a way to get rid of Lady Eve, framing Black Lightning for her death.

Though at the time Lady Eve was being electrocuted, Black Lightning was assaulting Tobias and his crew. Tobias’ sister, Tori, was shot in the back and died in the process, which Jeff regrets. He tells Anissa about her death, but doesn’t realize Tori was actually the person behind the plan to frame Black Lightning for Lady Eve’s death.

Now with Lady Eve gone, where does that leave the promises made between her and Gambi?

Her death might have removed the security surrounding the family, thus putting their lives in all the more danger. There was always the chance this would happen with Black Lightning coming back because it’s happened so quickly that none in the Pierce family – save for Lynn – have thought about the consequences.

Jeff and Anissa are quick to run to a fight, but aren’t ready to deal with what happens when the fights are over. Instead, they’ve put their lives in serious danger with more than The 100 coming after them. The Shadow Board and Tobias are a lot more to handle that some street corner drug dealers.

However, things don’t always stay dead in Freeland. Black Lightning ended with a return of Lala, who was killed by Tobias earlier in the season. Lawanda, who was killed by Lala, asks him if he believes in the Resurrection and then morphs into a tattoo on his body. Resurrection just happens to be the name of Black Lightning’s first episode – no idea if that is related at this point.

While there wasn’t too much action in this episode, a lot still happened: Jeff agreed to train Anissa, Lynn decided to embrace their powers in hopes of keeping her daughter safe, Lady Eve was killed, Tori was killed, and Black Lightning has become a murderer in the eyes of the Freeland community.

And yet we still don’t know if we can trust Gambi.

Tune into Black Lightning Tuesdays on the CW at 9/8c.
