The Good Doctor secures Season 2 order at ABC

It’s official. ABC has renewed it’s hit medical drama for a second season.

The renewal and cancellation notices are starting to come in and today’s notice is about The Good Doctor Season 2. A second season is officially happening.

This really isn’t that surprising news for many fans. ABC ordered a full-season order after just two episodes back in fall 2017. Despite its on-off schedule thanks to award ceremonies, the Winter Olympics, and The Bachelor‘s three-hour season finale, viewers have continued to tune in.

It’s overtaken the previous highest ranking medical drama on ABC, Grey’s Anatomy, and is the most-viewed freshman series in 13 years for the network. Honestly, ABC would have been stupid not to renew.

It’s easy to see why it was such a success. The Good Doctor, adapted from a Korean drama, took a very different take on the normal intern/resident storyline. Initially focused on Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young resident with both autism and savant syndrome. It’s since moved on to look at other main characters in the series and covered a number of major political topics, including the trans-discussion, inclusion of disabilities, and two people in a relationship wanting different things (something Grey’s Anatomy still struggles to get right).

Now the question is about a season order. This isn’t clear, as Freddie Highmore, who plays the lead role in the series, only has up to 18 episodes in his contract. The first season is only going to be 18 episodes because of this, so the network will likely follow suit with The Good Doctor Season 2.

The Good Doctor joins CBS’ Young Sheldon and FOX’s The Gifted as the freshman shows getting new season so far. As we’re now getting closer to the end of the seasons for all shows, expect more renewal notices to come through.
