Do we have a The Last Kingdom Season 3 release date yet? Is The Last Kingdom Season 3 even happening? Where are we exactly with the BBC/Netflix series?

More from Drama

We are fast approaching the one-year mark since we last watched Uhtred, son of Uhtred, in The Last Kingdom. Season 2 aired its finale episode on Star Wars day, May 4, 2017 and we are still in the dark on what exactly is going on with season 3.

Nothing official has been announced from The Last Kingdom, the BBC or Netflix. At best we have one vital piece of information that points in the direction of a Season 3 release date. But even that involves some guesswork.

It was reported last year, that in September 2017 a casting call was put out very quietly for The Last Kingdom. Requesting a disabled actor, wheelchair-bound, amputee or similar, to play the role of a “Saxon monk who does not have the use of his legs.”

A very specific role, and a role that would be featured in the first two episode of the season 3. The casting call also stated that the actor would need to be available between October 23, 2017, and mid-May 2018.

So that’s it, The Last Kingdom Season 3 is a go?

Yes and no.

The casting call indicates that Season 3 was, at the very least, being planned. However, there was always the chance that the casting call was put out in preparation for The Last Kingdom Season 3 but then stopped at a later date because the show got cancelled.

Considering it is now March 2018 and we still have no confirmation of anything, cancellation or renewal, it would be safe to assume that the show did not get cancelled. If it was, we would have most likely had an announcement by now.

So, based on the casting call and the fact that we still have no announcements it would be a good bet to say that The Last Kingdom Season 3 is a go.

What about the release date?

Referring back to the casting call again. The actor had to be available between Oct. 23, 2017, and mid-May 2018 for filming. It would be a huge surprise to get a release date anytime before mid-May 2018. Realistically it would be several months after May as it will need to go through post-production.

A good estimate of the release date would be the tail end of 2018, most likely November. There is a possibility it will be deferred to 2019, however.

If the show decided to follow the same pattern between Season 1 and 2 then 2019 is likely. Season 1 was released in 2015 and Season 2 in 2017. The BBC has been known to take a long break between Seasons, any Sherlock fans will know this all too well. But, with Netflix backing the show it may not come to that.

Unfortunately, that is it. That’s all there is. Nothing else has been announced, unofficially or officially, regarding season 3. All we can do is keep an eye on any more announcements coming out and be patient.
