Hawkeye aka Clint Barton

The prevailing theory is that the character of Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner,) one of the non-powered Avengers, will be the one to bite the dust during Avengers: Infinity War.

This isn’t the first time that Hawkeye was thought of as being the casualty, seeing how Joss Whedon also promised a death during Avengers: Age Of Ultron. Hawkeye was the front-runner then, and Whedon even made it seem in the movie that Hawkeye would die, only for it to be a misdirect for Quicksilver’s death.

The marketing of Avengers: Infinity War has been the most telling, as Hawkeye is conspicuously missing from all the posters, trailers and promotional materials. Directors Anthony  & Joe Russo confirm that Hawkeye is in the movie, however, is ‘on his own journey’ during the events of the film.

If he does play an important part, maybe that part could be through a significant death that acts as a sacrifice. After the events of Captain America: Civil War, Hawkeye is as much a criminal as the rest of Team Cap. So maybe after he’s freed, he decides to go back to his family; until a tragedy befalls them, forcing Hawkeye back into the action, thirsting to avenge his family against Thanos.

Until Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Hawkeye was the least liked Avengers, which is sad because it seems that Jeremy Renner can’t catch a break on any sort of popularity contest, after failing to make over the Mission Impossible and Bourne franchises. However, the introduction of his family, and a new dynamic to his character as mentor and friend to Scarlet Witch, definitely added layers to the character that we love!

If the MCU does decide to go super dark and kill off Hawkeye’s family, then  his death would be the only foregone conclusion that remains to his journey. Without anything to live for, the usual nice of reason, going ballistic as he sacrifices himself for the greater good, would wreck audiences.

His death would have immense impact on the team, being the only non powered Avengers, as well as his close relationships with Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olson) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) would give them a lot of story beats as they deal with his death.
