The premiere of Syfy latest TV series dropped on Wednesday, 21 March, and while it has received a mixed bag of reviews, it does hold promise. The exploration of Superman’s planet, Krypton, before Superman came to be is something that has not been explored as much as we would have liked.
As I watched the premiere I was left both satisfied and intrigued by what had been created, but I was also left wondering if I had missed a thing or two. As someone who knows Superman on a basic level, there were moments in the episode where I wondered if I knew the Superman universe a bit more, would some of the moments in the episode had more significance?
That thought happened a lot when characters were being introduced. Names where being dropped and while they rang a distant bell in my head I couldn’t quite place the connection to the name.
This takes me to the present. Who exactly is who on planet Krypton and how do they play a role in the Superman universe?
House of El
The first and easy connection to make is the family members of House El, the direct ancestors of Superman, Kal-El. We were introduced to Seg-El, grandfather of Superman. Val-El, grandfather of Seg-El and Charys-El and Ter-El, mother and father of Seg-El.
As I said, the connection to Superman is easy. They are direct ancestors of the hero himself. Seg-El will one day sire a child, Jor-El, the father of Superman.
House of Zod
House Zod is another big name known in the Superman universe. Krypton introduced us to Lyta-Zod and her mother Jayna-Zod. Members of House Zod typically belonged to the Kryptonian Military Guild.
The connection to Superman is the famous supervillain General Zod. Zod attempted to take over planet Krypton but was stopped and banished to the phantom zone. This being the only reason Zod survived the destruction of Krypton.
He then became Superman’s enemy when he tried to take over planet Earth.
How exactly Lyta and Jayna connect with General Zod is a bit hazy and we need to wait and see what direction Krypton takes. As unlike House El, the franchise, TV, Movies and Comics, have not touched on House Zod in as much detail.
House of Vex
The name Vex shot past me at first and it wasn’t until towards the end of the episode that House Vex came out as a significant player. Not much is out there regarding the Vex family and how they connect to the Superman universe.
Krypton has tied them in with being the lawmakers of planet Krypton but there is a connection with General Zod as well. Car-Vex, part of the Kryptonian Military Guild, followed General Zod during the uprising. She too was captured and banished to the phantom zone. She was also part of General Zod’s army to take over planet Earth.
House of Em
Finding information about House Em is a nightmare. There is none. We got briefly introduced to Dev-Em in Krypton and that is all there is to know. If you know anything about House Em and how it connects to Superman then please, share it below in the comments so everyone can benefit.
