In the Season 2 finale of This Is Us, future Randall and Tess mentioned a mysterious ‘her.’ Who could she be? Here’s three new theories!

It would be the understatement of the century to say that This Is Us left us with unanswered questions. In fact, the Season 2 finale posed even more questions than it answered and forced fans to hang on the edge of three different cliffs during the summer hiatus. Perhaps the biggest cliffhanger feature another flash forward to the future timeline, and we’re still trying to connect the dots.

In the fateful scene, Randall and Tess sit across from each other at her job as a social worker (in which she uses a mighty futuristic computer) and vaguely discuss a mysterious “her.” Randall says its time to see her, but Tess responds that she’s not ready. Initially, we suggested that the only two options for “her” identity are Beth and Deja. However, upon further reflection, three more names from This Is Us have been added to the hat — and they’ll break your heart.

1. Annie

Even though it’s unfathomable to even entertain a future in which Annie isn’t innocent and adorable, we can’t deny she’s in the running. Who else has a connection to both Randall and Tess? Annie. For now, let’s not hypothesize that Annie could be estranged from her family or in some sort of trouble. Let’s just say she’s someone who Randall and Tess could each be hesitant to reach out to for some undisclosed reason. (Please don’t let it be Annie!)

2. Deja’s daughter

Here’s the first doozy. Think about it: Tess is a social worker. She’s placing children into safe homes. Wouldn’t it be full circle for Tess to have to place Deja’s daughter into another home? Perhaps Deja had already given up her daughter for adoption, and Randall and Tess have been avoiding visiting her. Either way, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Deja could have repeated history, even if that’s a little on the nose for This Is Us.

Next: Who is the ‘her’ Randall and Tess aren’t ready to see? Here’s the only two theories

3. Tess’ daughter

And the final doozy. Could Tess have gotten pregnant as a teenager and given up the baby for adoption? It’s possible, and it’s definitely a solid reading of that scene. Randall and Tess each deliver emotion powerful enough to denote that the “her” is someone they haven’t met and are afraid to meet. This Is Us hasn’t yet featured a teenage pregnancy storyline, and this could be their opportunity to tell a meaningful and touching story.

This Is Us returns for Season 3 in September on NBC.
