Who is Qovas (Peter Mensah) on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

On the latest episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Peter Mensah made a brief appearance during the episode’s concluding moments. Mensah didn’t formally introduce himself but he’s obviously playing a Hydra head.

To quickly recap, General Hale is part of Hydra. Her affiliation with the shadowy organization became known when she offered Coulson a deal, a deal that would see S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra united to stop the world’s destruction. Coulson hasn’t accepted yet and that’s because he knows someone above Hale is pulling the strings. He doesn’t get an answer from Hale but we later learn that Qovas (Peter Mensah) is one of them.

When we first see Qovas, he’s speaking to Hale from the shadows. He’s sorta berating her, reprimanding her for past failures but Hale isn’t budging, her resolve is too strong. Qovas warns her one final time then hands her a vial of Odium. With it, he exits from the dark chamber saying “Hail Hydra”.

Hydra is back and ready for action!

What we should take away from this is that Hydra’s back in the fold. They appeared to be at the end of their hope when the Framework was shut down, but now it looks like Anton Ivanov has kept the dream alive. Though, he’s not the only one.

Qovas also seems to be part of a larger organization, one that’s unified with Hydra, but they’ve taken on a new name, the Confederacy. It’s unclear as to why Hydra chose that name as their new cover but it’s worked to keep them off of everyone’s radar. Coulson had no idea about Hydra’s involvement until Hale and Ivanov revealed as much.

As far as who Qovas is, nothing’s really known about him. He’s obviously a top member of Hydra but we don’t know what purpose he serves on the series. Ordering around high-ranking officials like General Hale probably means he has some pull. Who knows, he might even be set up as the next major villain. His introduction was ominous enough for a villain of the Marvel Cinematic Universe so that could be where Season 5 is going. Nevertheless, Qovas should bring something interesting to the table, Peter Mensah is portraying him after all.
