Gabriel’s room in the bunker is covered in sigils in promo photos for Supernatural Season 13, Episode 18? Just why would Sam and Cass do this?

Supernatural Season 13, Episode 18 will see more about Gabriel’s story come out. However, something deeply interesting with the promo photos for “Bring ’em Back Alive” is that Gabriel’s room in the Men of Letters bunker is covered in sigils. They look like Enochian sigils at a glance, but it’s possible they’re covered in multiple forms of sigils.

These sigils aren’t in the sneak peek for the episode. It suggests that at some point Gabriel asks for them or Sam and Cass realize that they may be necessary. The big question is why? There are a few theories for this.

Protection against Asmodeus

More from Supernatural

Gabriel will have this fear that Asmodeus will come after him. Even though the bunker is hidden and protected (Crowley and Rowena only came in after being invited), there is always the chance that Asmodeus will find a way to track and locate Gabriel. This fear will be deep-rooted after the torture Gabriel has been through.

There’s a chance that the archangel has no idea about the bunker or what its protections are. Rather than risk Gabriel fleeing and hoping to protect himself, Sam and Cass may decide to put up a series of sigils to offer the view of protection. After all, Gabriel has likely lost his faith and trust in everything, so he can’t just take Sam and Cass’ words for it that the bunker is automatically protected.

Why Enochian sigils? Well, Asmodeus has been stealing grace. Will this mean Enochian sigils are needed to prevent him from coming through?

Protection from other threats

Our poor trickster archangel is going to be scared of everything and anything. There’s a high chance that Gabriel fears that anyone will come after him, so wants some form of protection.

The sigils being Enochian in the Supernatural Season 13, Episode 18 is a guess from the looks of them. They could be in other languages and formats, protecting Gabriel from the demigods that sold him to Asmodeus in the first place.

There’s an image with the bunker warnings going off. This suggests that someone or something is going to get in and the sigils in the room offer that extra layer of protection.

Prevent Gabriel escaping

It sounds odd, but the sigils could help to keep Gabriel in the room. While Sam and Cass won’t want to make him a prisoner, they will want to keep him protected from everything outside while they figure out everything that has happened. In a sense, they need to keep him locked in the room while they work through all the trauma and the details.

Also, there’s no telling what Gabriel will do or where he’ll go next. He’s always been good at disappearing and using illusions. Sam and Cass may worry that he’ll go off somewhere to hide and be found by demigods or Asmodeus’ lackeys again. Gabriel wouldn’t be able to think of the sensible option (remaining in the bunker) right now.

Protect themselves from Gabriel

Someone who is going through trauma isn’t able to think straight. The sneak peek hints that Gabriel doesn’t remember everything that’s happened before imprisonment. He needs time to adjust to the world he’s in. Plus time moves differently in Hell (remember Dean was in Hell for four months but it was more like 40 years), so Gabriel could have been stuck in Hell for centuries.

Gabriel could be a danger to himself and to others. We don’t know when the images of the sigils are taken, but they could be after Gabriel attacks Sam and Cass, believing them to be a danger. Rather than risk another attack, they could put up the sigils to subdue his powers temporarily until they find a way to help him.
