Lucifer Season 3: Why did [Spoiler] disappear?

facebooktwitterreddit

A major event happened on Lucifer last night, but why? What exactly caused a particular curse to finally be lifted?

Caution: Spoilers in this post from last night’s episode!

It’s been Pierce’s ultimate goal: To lose the mark that was put on him by God/Amenadiel when he murdered his brother Abel.

Doomed to walk the earth for all eternity alone he has been desperate to remove it and die. So far all of his efforts have failed but in last night’s episode of Lucifer, the mark was finally gone.

But what was it that lifted the curse? What exactly did Pierce do that was different this time compared to all his other failed attempts?

Love

The most obvious reason is love. We watched as he manipulated Chloe into falling in love with him. Pierce was so sure that if she fell in love with him then the mark would leave him. Then, when free of the mark, he would finally have what he always wanted and would leave her.

But in the final moment, he couldn’t do it. Realising that he couldn’t do that to Chloe. That he could not hurt her he left. So was this why Pierce’s mark disappeared. So sure that he needed to Chloe to love him but in actual fact it was he who had to love her?

It is the most obvious reason but maybe there is another.

Acceptance

Ever since Pierce was cursed, back when he was better known as Cain, he has been desperate to get rid of it. We have heard his tales in previous episodes of Lucifer of how he tried to have the curse lifted and die. How he tried everything. From decapitation, melting by molten lava, etc, etc. Everything he did failed.

One thing he never did, however, was accept his curse. Granted he took breaks from trying to have it removed but he never truly accepted it. Until now.

Was Pierce’s decision to accept that he could have what he always wanted but would not take it acceptance of his curse? Therefore by accepting his punishment laid out by God.

A big part of any religion is acceptance, so this is a logical possibility.

It could always be both. Maybe both love and acceptance lifted it. We will need to wait and see what happened on Lucifer and more importantly what will Pierce do now that he is no longer cursed.
