Supergirl returns this week with an episode about Winn and his family. The past surely comes back to haunt him in this one.

“Don’t Luke Skywalker me, this crazy woman is trying to kill you.”

Supergirl starts the episode off in stunning fashion with the crew going out for karaoke night. Mon-El picks up on the fact that James is seeing someone. However, the night was abruptly interrupted by the news of Winn’s father (the Toyman) being found dead in prison.

Winn and the rest of the crew go to the funeral for his father and his mother (Mary) shows up once it is pretty much over. In one last prank, the Toyman blows up his own grave. This gives Winn a chance to have one of his finest moments during his time on the show, too. He confronts Mary and she explains that his father threatened his life if she didn’t leave. Through the whole encounter, though, the anger is written all over Winn’s face. It really is a fine piece of acting from Jeremy Jordan.

Mary is told to surrender by way of a flying money writing a message in the sky and then having an army of them attack. James does his part to help without having to don the Guardian suit. The CGI isn’t fantastic at this moment, but it’s passable.

In a little side story, Alex has dinner with J’onn and M’yrnn at their place. They have a brief conversation on the two of them choosing to live as black men, which isn’t an easy thing to do. The mood quickly shifts when M’yrnn can’t remember the word wine, though. Later, he even forgets that he had two granddaughters. He asks Alex to keep it a secret from J’onn, but she tells him that J’onn needs to know. This already feels like a side story that won’t end well for anyone involved.

Mary tells Winn when exactly his father threatened his life. She was trying to get Winn away from him and you can see that Winn is starting to believe her. However, Mary almost immediately turns around, steals a gun and heads to Wiggins Game Company because she found a piece in the monkey that told her exactly where to go.

The Toyman’s protege is the maintenance worker from the prison. It isn’t until Winn, James, Kara and Mon-El get to Wiggins Game Company. We see a flame throwing tank, plane bombs, a mechanic dinosaur and Supergirl in a life-size action figure casing. We get some fun scenes of the heroes fighting off the toys. It’s ultimately Winn and Mary who take out the protege.

We return to Karaoke Night to have the episode come full circle at the end. Mary gets to tell Winn how proud she is of him finally and Winn actually wants her to stay. Plus, Mon-El finally gets to tell Kara what he’s been trying to tell her for the whole episode. He tells her about the third Worldkiller who evolves into Blight and that if they can find her today, they can save many lives.

Winn forces his mom to get on the stage with him and sing “Take On Me.” J’onn joins the crew after he finds out about his father’s condition. Alex knew right away that M’yrnn made the choice to tell them and her and J’onn really do have a sort of father/daughter relationship that is endearing.

In a cliffhanger, Lena is clearly lying to James about where she’s been with Sam and this leads us to believe she knows what Sam really is. This will play out more based on the preview for next week’s episode and I can’t wait to see it.

Supergirl airs on Monday on The CW at 8pm EST. Be sure to tune in!
