Timeless heads to San Antonio, Texas to prevent Rittenhouse from ending the rise of counterculture – rock and roll and music as we know it. Connor Mason tags along in the Lifeboat’s first upgraded four-seat voyage!

Timeless ventures just two years from when they picked up JFK but as always it’s practically a completely different world. And not just because of the little changes these missions cause. November of 1936 has a few important things going on but only person is equipped with the knowledge of what’s happening in San Antonio and it’s not Lucy (Abigail Spencer)!

Connor Mason (Paterson Joseph) has always been this presence surrounding this trips back in time. The whole venture started with him and his time machine. He saw potential in Rufus (Malcolm Barrett) and made sure he was able to get the education he needed. Striped off all of that in the present Mason is forced to reconcile with the loss of everything he’s known. His company’s holdings. His prestige. His power. Everything he’s associated with himself that has brought him to this point has been taken from him and it seems like it’s the truly the end of the line. Though he feels he deserves it for aligning himself with Rittenhouse to achieve some of that greatness, Mason no longer knows where he fits in. Until this particular mission.

When the beginning of counterculture – dating all the way back to recording of blues legend Robert Johnson – is threatened by Rittenhouse, the #ClockBlockers must travel back and make sure this Johnson’s album gets recorded. With the Lifeboat newly upgraded to seat four, Agent Christopher (Sakina Jaffrey) pulls Wyatt (Matt Lanter) off the mission and decides to send Flynn (Goran Visnijc) instead. With an extra seat Wyatt is confused why he won’t be joining the others but it works out for the better when the team decides that Mason should join them instead.

He’s the most knowledgeable about what happens and how crucial this recording is so it makes sense. But the team quickly learns that this will be Mason’s first trip back in time! While he was the brains and money behind the operation he never took a trip himself for a combination of reasons, but mostly fear…actually entirely fear. And he’s quick to point out how dangerous it is to which the entire team (including Flynn) reacts with extreme derision and disbelief.

Mason is no Doc Brown from Back to the Future – though he does share a pretty convincing affinity for a particular era and a similar eccentricity. The mission itself finds him questioning exactly what he contributes as he relates to Robert Johnson in his own defeat. However, Rufus shows Mason that he’s just as vital to what they’re doing and Mason finds himself ingrained in the fabric of Robert Johnson’s history in a way that reinvigorates and revitalizes his entire purpose. And it’s because of a simple recording and “Yeah!” that appears on an old record some 80 years in the future.

On a semi-related note Supernatural fans might enjoy a little nod to crossroad demons in this episode, though the legend of Robert Johnson and his “deal with the devil” is as much steeped in myth as it is in historical fact!

Spoiler Bits

  • Wyatt is tasked with a very important, very dangerous mission in the present that puts him right in the heart of Rittenhouse headquarters where he he’s forced to make a decision about Lucy’s mother.
  • Flynn and Lucy have an incredibly intimate and important conversation but it’s hard to tell if he’s manipulating her because he’s read her diary or if he really “wants to get to know her” as he claims. A bottle of vodka might be the way they find out if the latter is true. Flynn feels that hope is their great uniter – they both believe that one day they can save the people they love.
  • Jiya (Claudia Doumit) has a premonition about Rufus that should it come true will have tragic and catastrophic consequences for the team as we know it! The nature of her visions and their potential to come true as fixed points in time will truly be put to the test!

Lines to look out for. Can you guess who delivers them?

  • “Modern day, modern weapons”
  • “And boom goes the dynamite”
  • “Get some clothes, steal a car”
  • “I’m Taylor Swift, this is Agent Timberlake – we’re apart of the new FBI”
  • “You should know the Lucy in that journal. She’s very very impressive”
