Tobias Whale declared himself the new king of Freeland in the Black Lightning season finale. But why? What was in that briefcase?

A lot went down in the Black Lightning season finale. The “Make America Great Again” cliché, aka Martin Proctor was stopped. The ASA is no longer coming after the Pierce family and the Metas of Freeland, for now anyway. Henderson acknowledges the work that Black Lighting and co. had done, and more.

Things are definitely looking up for the Pierce family.  However, one thing that was not wrapped up and will continue into season two is the ongoing battle between Tobias Whale and Black Lightning. Tobias was one of the few characters who was not stopped in the finale. We will no doubt see him again next season with Khalil, now Painkiller, and Syonide. And he will be back stronger than ever.

After gaining access to Proctor’s briefcase, Tobias proudly declared that he was the new king of Freeland. So what was in that briefcase to make Tobias so confident in his future?

An army of Metas

We know that the briefcase had something to do with those poor kids locked up in pods. When Gambi and the Pierce family tried to free them, they needed the briefcase to do so. Is this what was in the briefcase? Access to the kids?

More from CW

If so, will this be the key for Tobias to create a Meta army? Tobias has always been good at manipulating those around him. If he has the key to giving the kids their freedom, will he manipulate them to do his bidding and thereby creating his own personal army of Metas?

Another possibility is the briefcase is how to control the kids. The briefcase is needed to remove them safely from the pods. Not the actual key to removing them. Think about it for a moment. If you had been locked away against your will, you would be looking for some payback.

So the ASA must have had a fail-safe plan for this sort of thing, aka the briefcase. If this is the case, Tobias could then control the Metas. Regardless if he frees them or not, he can use them to take over Freeland.

It’s Green Light

When Tobias opened up the case, there was a lovely glow of green coming from it.

The street drug Green Light was the drug of choice in Freeland. Whoever dealt the drug ruled the streets but when there was no more Green Light to sell, problems appeared. No one wanted to go back to the usual crack and cocaine type drugs, they wanted Green Light.

If Tobias has come across a supply of the most wanted drug in Freeland in that briefcase, then he will instantly hold all of the power. Green Light is the drug of choice, and if he is the only who is able to supply it, then he can demand whatever he wants.

It might not be until season 2 gets underway that we will learn what exactly is inside the case. For now, all we can do is speculate. What we can all agree on is whatever it is inside the briefcase is obviously a game changer for Tobias and nothing good, in any way, for Black Lightning.
