This time of year was once known as season finale month as all shows began heading into their offseason break but times have changed. With the arrival of May comes a handful of new shows to look forward to. Here are 5 to keep an eye out for!

The summer movie blockbuster season is just starting up but that doesn’t mean there is less TV to look forward to. Sure, a lot of networks are winding down their big shows before putting out their new shows for the summer schedule. But let’s not forget about streaming services. A lot of fan favorites will be coming back within the next few months. More specifically, the couple of weeks will see the return of Netflix series such as 13 Reasons Why and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Along with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and Starz will be getting in on the fun with major premieres throughout the month of May. Most of the premiers come in the first half of the month but considering many drop the entire series at once, there is plenty of time to pace everything out. Here are the shows worth checking out in May:

1. The Rain

Starring: Alba August, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Mikkel Følsgaard, Angela Bundalovic

Network: Netflix

Premiere Date: May 4, 2018 (all episodes streaming)

Netflix’s latest series will certainly be a must-watch for horror fans. The post-apocalyptic Danish series follows siblings, Simone and Rasmus, as they emerge from a bunker after six years and find most of civilization is gone. Set in Scandinavia, a deadly virus wiped out most of the population through the rain. The eight-part series will focus on the siblings as they find a group of survivors and journey through a life far different than what they were prepared for.

2. Sweetbitter

Starring: Ella Purnell, Tom Sturridge, Caitlin FitzGerald, Paul Sparks, Evan Jonigkeit

Network: Starz

Premiere Date: May 6, 2018, at 8/7c

Based on the 2016 novel of the same name by author Stephanie Danler, Sweetbitter follows 22-year-old Tess as she moves to New York City. Tess finds a job at a downtown restaurant which opens up the door to a new lifestyle involving drugs, drinking, and lust. As she navigates this newfound life, she learns valuable lessons along the way. The season will play out in six half-hour episodes as part of the new Sunday night lineup.

3. Vida

Starring: Melissa Barrera, Mishel Prada, Karen Ser Anzoategui, Chelsea Rendon, Carlos Miranda, Maria Elena Laas

Network: Starz

Premiere Date: May 6, 2018, at 8:30/7:30c

Premiering directly after Sweetbitter as part of Starz’s new lineup, comes another half-hour series, Vida. The dramedy follows two Mexican-American sisters from Los Angeles after they are forced to return to their old neighboorhood. The estranged sisters stayed distanced from one another but a revelation about their mother’s identity brings them together. The cast is already garnering rave reviews for their performances in the witty series.

4. All Night

Starring: Chris Avila, Brec Bassinger, Chanel Celaya, Ty Doran, Teala Dunn, Allie Grant, Caleb Ray Gallegos, Eva Gutowski, Tetona Jackson, Gus Kamp, Tom Maden, Jenn McAllister

Network: Hulu

Premiere Date: May 11, 2018 (all episodes streaming)

The upcoming Hulu comedy gives recent grads one night to live out their remaining high school dreams. As the Senior Class of Sherman Grove High School is locked in during an overnight grad party, their time is running out to fulfill their bucket list. Just because the 10-episode series takes place over that one glorious night, it doesn’t mean there won’t be a ton of stories to tell. And just like most of life through high school, things don’t go exactly as planned.

5. Picnic at Hanging Rock

Starring: Natalie Dormer, Lola Bessis, Yael Stone, Anna McGahan, Sibylla Budd, Lily Sullivan, Madeleine Madden, Samara Weaving

Network: Amazon Prime

Premiere Date: May 25, 2018 (all episodes streaming)

The limited series is a remake of the 1975 film and based on the 1967 novel of the same name. Set in 1900 Australia, three schoolgirls and their teacher mysteriously disappear after an outing. The investigation of the missing girls has a major impact on the school, including the fellow students, staff, and family members. Game of Thrones alum Natalie Dormer plays the school’s headmistress, Mrs. Hester Appleyard.
