What happened to the Hulk in Avengers: Infinity War?

As most of us are aware, something strange happened to the Hulk in Avengers: Infinity War. After taking a beating from Thanos in the first act, Hulk refused to come out when Banner tried to summon him. This has drawn many fans to speculate what happened to the Hulk.
The nature of Hulk’s cohabitation with Bruce Banner was strange, to begin with, but now there’s something even weirder about their relationship. The difference now is that Hulk is refusing to emerge from inside of Banner. He took a beating from Thanos, reverted back to Banner’s form, and then refused to come out for the entirety of the film. There hasn’t been an explanation as to why but it may have to do with the beating he took.
In case it wasn’t already apparent, the Hulk thinks he’s the strongest there is. He even said so in Thor: Ragnarok. So when the Mad Titan gets up in his grill and beats him senseless, Hulk is shocked. At this point, he realizes he’s not the strongest and his mortality is a real thing for him. Because of that fear, Bruce Banner’s alter-ego has been driven into hiding.
Now that he’s incapable of fighting the same way, this may prevent Hulk from coming out for the time being but some event will force him out. I mean, if Banner’s life is in immediate danger, the Hulk will have to emerge to protect them both. The thing is, we don’t know when that’ll happen.

Regardless of when Hulk emerges, Bruce Banner is going to have a problem with him staying out of the fight. The Hulk has forced his way out of Banner’s body at the most inopportune times and now when Banner actually needs him, the Hulk is refusing to come out. There’s obviously going to be some inner-conflict because of that but we don’t know how they’ll sort things out. Let’s just hope their conflict doesn’t result in a separation because that’s never ended well for them.
On the plus side, Hulk and Banner conversing and negotiating, could give birth to a version of the Joe Fixit Hulk. One that retains Banner’s intelligence and the Hulk’s strength. We already saw how battle ready Banner was in Avengers: Infinity War, one can only imagine what he could do inside of the Hulk’s body. But until then, Banner is going to have a difficult time getting the Hulk out of his shell.
Another bright note, at least Funko released a very cool figure showing what we thought we’d see in Infinity War. If there’s a figure out, it makes you wonder if a scene will be included in the Blu-ray disc’s deleted scenes.
