Jennifer Love Hewitt joining 9-1-1 Season 2: Connie Britton not returning?

Jennifer Love Hewitt has officially joined the cast of 9-1-1 Season 2. What does this mean about Connie Britton’s character, Abby?

9-1-1 Season 1 left us with the fate of Abby in the air. After the death of her mom, Abby decided to go on an adventure and leave Buck behind. Connie Britton’s contract was up and she’d said that she didn’t want to be in another long series, so the news wasn’t that surprising. However, Ryan Murphy was still trying to keep her on. Now it looks like Jennifer Love Hewitt is set to take over the gap for 9-1-1 Season 2.

Britton isn’t coming back to the series; at least for now. She’s taking up her own pilot which she’ll co-executive produce, so she’ll have her hands full with that. Love Hewitt is going to become the newest 9-1-1 operator on the team, but will also have a direct connection to Buck.

She’ll play the character Maddie, sister of firefighter Buck. Maddie moves to the area to start a new life. We don’t know much more than that, but she’s sure to create a stir. Could she be someone to get in the middle of Bobby and Athena, who finally started to find happiness and support within each other in the Season 1 finale?

While 9-1-1 does focus on the personal lives of the first responders and operators, it has also managed to focus well on the drama and sometimes strange callouts. This will hopefully be another chance to see the kind and caring characters that Love Hewitt has often played, such as Melinda in Ghost Whisperer.

FOX shared earlier today that 9-1-1 Season 2 will move to the fall lineup. It’s taking over the Monday night slot at 9/8c, showing that the network has a lot of faith in it. Love Hewitt is, so far, the only new face coming to the series and others look set to return to their original roles.
