Tonight’s 2-hour Shadowhunters mid-season finale is filled with action, suspense, heart-breaking moments and more than one intense cliffhanger going into season 3B. Who’s in the most danger in episodes 9 and 10?

Tonight’s 2-hour mid-season Shadowhunters finale is packed with action, suspense, unexpected turns, and cliffhangers that will leave you pacing around your house yelling expletives into the night (oh wait, that was just me).

With an expected season 3B release for late in the summer, we’ll have a few months to process everything that goes down at the end of Shadowhunters season 3A, and like Anna Hopkins explained last week, the ending is just “half happy”.

With double the amount of screen time, there’s twice as much story to tease in our final Shadowhunters season 3A preview post, but we absolutely promise not to spoil the fun. So without giving any important information away, here’s what you should be excited (and nervous) about in tonight’s epic mid-season finale.

Clary’s death row sentence in Alicante

Arguably, Clary is absolutely in the most danger at the start of episode 9. In the teaser clip released yesterday (is anyone else getting The Handmaid’s Tale vibes with these robes??), we see that the Clave has a monthly ritual of burning prisoners at the stake. And it’s the ritualistic part that creeps us out the most. We knew the Clave was a terrible organization, but this scene puts them on a whole new level of evil. The first few minutes of the episode might make you second guess if you’re watching the right show, and seeing Clary as a warrior in this way is really interesting.

More from Teen Dramas

As Clary anxiously waits for her own name to be called, she stands among some familiar faces, including Iris Rouse.  But what we don’t yet know is why Iris is there in the first place, and when Clary has an opportunity to speak with her, she gains the additional tools she needs to take action in her own way (because this isn’t Game of Thrones, and the main character of the show is not going to die….).

And you’re not going to believe the death-defying twists and turns the storyline takes from here regarding Clary’s ability to manipulate situations. There are supernatural elements the show has yet to explore (nor did the book series) that become crucial to the storyline here, and I’m extremely curious to see the reaction from fans about how Clary’s going to work her way out of this dilemma, both physically and ethically.
