Supernatural 300th episode just a milestone, not the end

Supernatural fans have worried for the last couple of years that the 300th episode would be the last. A fall start for Season 14 hints that 300 isn’t the end.

Supernatural Season 14 is premiering in the fall, just as expected. This hints that the series will not end with the Supernatural 300th episode like many fans have worried. After all, the majority of CW shows in the fall don’t run for only half a season.

Rumors of the show ending with the 300th episode started when Jared Padalecki talked about the next milestone. His comments were taken out of context and even Jensen Ackles trying to help explain the situation didn’t help. Multiple publications routinely touted the 300th episode as the end.

If this was the case, it would mean Supernatural Season 14, Episode 13 would be the end. As of the Season 13 finale, the show has aired 287 episodes. A rough premiere has told us that the series isn’t going to wrap with the Supernatural 300th episode. The CW’s veteran fall shows don’t get a half season order unless there is something dangerously wrong or if that has previously been negotiated. While we don’t currently have a set full season order, rumors are currently that it will be at least 20 episodes.

As expected, the 300th episode really is just a milestone to work towards.

Will Supernatural Season 14 be the end?

This, of course, doesn’t mean the series will go past the 14th season. At the time of writing this, the contracts in place for Ackles and Padalecki only run up to the end of this season. There is a chance to negotiate further, but nothing locking the two actors in place.

The CW’s Mark Pedowitz has always said there would be a home for the series as long as the lead actors wanted to do it and the ratings held. However, Pedowitz was also extremely positive about spin-off Wayward Sisters and then decided against it, so it’s hard to tell what he really thinks about a situation.

Should the series hold steady, there is a chance Supernatural Season 15 will be offered. Then it will be up to the stars to see if they want to continue to series. Hopefully, the network will give us some warning that the series is going to come to an end. The Vampire Diaries and The Originals both made announcements at San Deigo Comic-Con the summer before their last seasons started. There’s hope that Supernatural will be offered the same treatment, so if Season 14 is going to be the end, we should get some sort of warning about that during SDCC 2018 in July.
