In the latest episode of Into the Badlands Sunny runs into an old foe. Meanwhile, Tilda has new problems with Odessa and a new agreement with The Widow. We also had a major death.

The episode of Into the Badlands begins with Sunny and Bajie arriving at a colorful market. We immediately see that this place is not for regular citizens. There are dog fights, people fighting in the streets, and exotic animals being sold.

We are introduced to a lady who is playing a game of chance that could end in your hand being impaled. When the person playing against her accuses her of cheating another fight is about to break out when Bajie steps in to defend her. Her name is Lily and she is the person Bajie is there to find. When the fight breaks out, Bajie seems to be doing fine but he looks over to Sunny confused because he’s not helping.

Sunny was angry when Bajie jumped into the fight and instead is having a drink. Between fighting, Bajie keeps looking over at Sunny who is completely unmoved. However, when a few guys turn their attention to Lily, Sunny finishes his drink and jumps in. He is fighting with Henry strapped to his back and dodging when people go to hit him in the back.

They eventually escape but Lily is not happy. She tells them that she won’t be welcomed back into The Black Wind now. This is when Bajie tells Sunny that she is his ex-wife.

Tilda and Odessa

Back in the Badlands, Odessa calls Lydia out for leaving the refugee camp. Lydia tells them that when the war is over the poppy fields will grow food and people will reap what they sow. She also tells Odessa and Tilda that they are fighting a war they can’t possibly win and that they need to choose to either work with The Widow or die.

When she leaves the room Odessa says she’s done fighting and wants out. Tilda tells Odessa that she won’t turn her back on the refugees. When Odessa asks if that means she would rather turn her back on her, Tilda doesn’t say anything. Odessa tells Tilda to rest and leaves.

Pilgrim learns about Castor

At the site where Pilgrim is building, he delivers a great speech to the refugees that have been delivered to him. He tells them they aren’t prisoners and offers them to become Acolytes. They all join and pick up pick axes to get to work.

Chau’s regent then comes over to confirm that her debt is paid. Pilgrim confirms that it is and the regent offers his condolences for Castor. He tells Pilgrim he fought well but was captured.

Back at the temple (museum), Pilgrim confronts Cressida about this. When she says that he chose to go and that their duty is to Azra not to the kid, Pilgrim gets even more angry. He takes an incredibly strong tone (which we haven’t seen from him up to this point) and tells her that if she deceives him again she will suffer.

Sunny remembers the boat

Back on the boat, Sunny is talking with Bajie when he has a sudden memory. He remembers being on this boat as a child and tells Bajie he’s been remembering things ever since Ankara touched him. He feels like he’s losing his mind.

Sunny then goes to Lily and asks how she’s getting past the River King. She tells Sunny that she has an arrangement with him, which should have alarmed him. She goes on to tell him about how she and Bajie hooked up as pirates and that one day he got a lead on Azra and left. He took all of the money they had and left her a note. She’s been struggling ever since.

Tilda and the Widow

Tilda goes back and sees the devastation at the refugee camp. She tells the nurse, Vitania, that she wants to help but Vitania tells her that they need protection. She fears Baron Chau’s clippers will return.

Tilda then meets with Minerva. She tells her that she wants to help take Chau down but not as her regent or as her daughter. The Widow is surprised but can see that Tilda is working to hide any emotion as she agrees to the truce.

Captive Castor

Minerva then goes to where she’s holding Castor. It’s the same room MK was previously in and she asks Castor how Pilgrim controls his gift. Castor says that Pilgrim was chosen by Azra which obviously doesn’t satisfy The Widow.

After Castor falls back unconscious, Moon suggests that they cut his head off and send it to Pilgrim to send a message. Minerva instead insists that he be prepped for travel. She doesn’t want to intimidate Pilgrim, she wants answers from him.

Sunny has another vision

Sunny is sleeping when he jumps awake. He sees his younger self again and this time he follows him through the boat to another area. There is a symbol carved into the bedpost and Sunny suddenly remembers carving it. As the full memory comes back, we can hear chaos on the upper deck before a hand comes over young Sunny’s mouth to keep him quiet.

The Widow and Pilgrim

A rendezvous was set up for PIlgrim and Minerva and at the meeting they argue about him taking the refugees. She warns him to stay out of her war and he asks her about Castor.

When she has Castor brought out he is confused and asks her why she’d be kind to him in this way. She replies that a father should get to say goodbye to their son and that they aren’t enemies. Pilgrim then says that anyone who seeks power for themselves and will not humble themselves before him is his enemy.

Minerva then steps to him and says she seeks peace for the Badlands and she won’t humble herself before him or any other man.

The small exchanges

  • As Castor is being handed off, MK makes eye contact with Tilda. She’s concerned but he seems happy as an Acolyte.
  • Before they part, Cressida tells Minerva that she had the gift. Minerva is shocked that she knew this. When Cressida asks if she longs to have it back, The Widow walks away.
  • Moon is shocked by Minerva’s play but she says that she bought them time with Pilgrim. She says she’s going to need to take down Chau first because she’ll need her army to fight the Acolytes.

The River King

Sunny wakes up again, this time there is really shouting outside. As he emerges, he sees Bajie being held with a long blade to his neck. Additional men show up to confront Sunny. Lily has turned them in to The River King because they had a large bounty on their heads.

A fight ensues and Lily escapes to her cabin where she can watch the fight.

Though they took some blows, Sunny and Bajie manage to fight off enough of the men to get the upper hand for a second. When Bajie confronts Lily she puts a blade to his neck. He apologies, genuinely, for what he did to her and she lowers the blade.

The River King re-emerges (he had ducked out when the fighting began) thinking that his men have got Sunny cornered. Sunny then appears above him and attacks. He has The River King pinned as a man tries to come up behind him but Lily takes him out.

Sunny asks him why he shouldn’t gut him and The River King says that he can help get him to Pilgrim. Sunny decides to take him prisoner instead of killing him.

Castor’s fate

Back at the temple (museum), Nix is nursing Castor who is weaker than ever. He tells her that Pilgrim lied by telling them they’d see Azra together as he won’t live to see it. He tries to shake her faith but she isn’t wavering. When MK comes in Castor tries to attack him. MK doesn’t want to fight but when he’s given no choice he starts to. Nix breaks it up before any real fighting takes place.

At that point Pilgrim shows up and tells Nix to leave with MK. To add insult to illness, Nix grabs MK by the hand as they leave. Castor is clearly hurt by this. He apologizes to Pilgrim for how he acted.

They are in a part of the museum that was dedicated to the samurai and Pilgrim gives Castor a history lesson. He concludes his samurai lesson by saying that the sharpness of their blades was only matched by the purity of their hearts and that he too is pure. He then tells Castor that they’ll sing his praises in the halls of Azra as her grabs him and snaps his neck.

The episode ends with him crying and holding Castor’s body.

Conclusion

After fighting with Cressida all season about not putting Castor out of his misery Pilgrim finally decided to. This had to be a tough decision for him and it’s going to be interesting to see how this affects him going forward. Meanwhile, Cressida knows that she’s on his bad side so there are some cracks in the Acolyte foundation.

The next episode did not hint to us about what happens with the Acolytes but it looks like Wren may be back to challenge The Widow with a new leg. Sunny also runs into someone who recognizes him as the boy the men were after when the boat was attacked when he was a child. It looks to be a big episode

Into the Badlands returns next week at 10/9 Central on AMC.
