While no official announcement has been made, it appears as if The Walking Dead has added Zach McGowan to the cast of Season 9. The question is, who will McGowan play in the ever-expanding world of The Walking Dead.

At the moment, production on The Walking Dead’s ninth season is in full force. Shooting is underway and the cast members are getting to know some newcomers. One of the newest additions to the cast is Zach McGowan. He hasn’t officially been cast but an Instagram post by Pollyanna McIntosh all but confirms his involvement.

In the post, McIntosh is joined by her co-stars from The Walking Dead and McGowan. The accompanying text doesn’t explicitly welcome McGowan to the cast but the commenters who’ve seen the image all seemed to come to that conclusion. At the same time, McGowan’s own fan club congratulated him on getting the part. So, it’s probably safe to say he has an upcoming role on the series.

As far as who McGowan could be playing is anyone’s guess. Though, a popular theory online suggests he’s Beta of The Whisperers. McGowan has the hair and looks for the part but there’s no way to tell if that’s who he’s portraying, especially when The Whisperers haven’t been introduced yet.

The other possibility is for McGowan to play a member of Magna’s group. Casting for Magna was recently announced, meaning her character will need some company. Yumiko, Magna’s girlfriend from the comics was included in the announcement but we should also expect more members of her group to join them. Any of whom could be played by Zach McGowan.

Is Zach McGowan playing a member of Magna’s group?

If McGowan is set to play a member of Magna’s group, he probably won’t play one of the guys who gets devoured when they run into Jesus, in the comics.

In the comics, when Magna’s group is surrounded by a herd of walkers, Jesus stumbles upon them. He manages to get Magna and her group to safety but a few of them die in the process. Jesus then takes Magna and her group back to the Alexandria Safe-Zone.

The reason McGowan’s character will survive for a few episodes is that as an actor, he hasn’t had too many brief television roles. While he has made one-time appearances before, McGowan has mostly taken on recurring roles. Therefore, it goes to reason that his part on The Walking Dead will be similar.

Whoever he’s playing, Zach McGowan joining The Walking Dead comes at a good time. With the series losing two of its central stars in the upcoming season, some worthwhile additions are needed. It’s still to be determined how substantial of a part McGowan actually has but his appearance should be interesting nonetheless.

The Walking Dead returns for Season 9 in October. The Mid-Season Finale of Fear The Walking Dead airs this Sunday on AMC.
