MoviePass, the movie ticket subscription service, has been going through a rough patch with a film they invested on, Gotti. What exactly is happening?

A part of Gotti’s budget was financed by MoviePass, a monthly subscription service which allows subscribers to watch multiple movies for a low monthly fee. The service was also in charge of distributing Gotti and promote it.

Gotti quickly made headlines after its release. Even before the movie debuted in theaters, advanced screenings left critics with a lot to say. How did the movie do? Well, I’m sure you heard, absolutely terrible.

Deadline reports MoviePass invested seven figures in Gotti, which was put together for $10 million, reportedly. The movie stars John Travolta, Kelly Preston, and Al Pacino. Gotti tanked at the box office, only collecting $1.7 million in its opening weekend. According to the source, $668 thousand of this total went to MoviePass. It’s not looking like Gotti will collect much more in theaters, so MoviePass will surely suffer in funds.

Why did the movie fail so badly? Well, honestly, it could simply just be a poor movie. But its Rotten Tomato score doesn’t help at all — a zero! That’s right. Out of 30 reviews, not one is positive. Its Audience Score, however, is a decent 61%, what gives?

If you ask MoviePass, critics are being trolls. Why does the audience love it, but not critics? In Gotti‘s defense, critics don’t always agree with fans. It’s always better to watch a movie, if it seems interesting to you, and judge for yourself. And that’s exactly what the marketing strategy MoviePass and production is going with.

The people behind Gotti were even accused of hacking the Audience Scores to give the film a good rating. Rotten Tomatoes, however, quickly released a statement about that being false:

"“We closely monitor our platforms and haven’t determined there to be any problems. All of the reviews were left by active account.”"

So if the Audience Score is real, is the movie really not that bad? You’ll have to watch the movie yourself to find out! If you’re a MoviePass subscriber, you really have nothing to lose. Well, other than two hours of your time if you end up not liking the movie. But you have to admit you’re curious about it!
