Supernatural is acting as the lead-in for not one but three new CW shows in fall 2018. What does this mean about the longest-running show on the network?

In case you missed it, Supernatural Season 14 officially has a premiere date. The CW is the second of the primetime networks to release its premiere dates for the fall. This year, there was something a little different from previous years. Supernatural is acting as a support for all three new shows to the network.

We already knew the Winchesters would act as a lead-in for The Originals spin-off Legacies. This isn’t that surprising since both shows are of the same genre. However, Legacies won’t premiere until later in October. The two other new shows, All American and Charmed will also get special treatment. An encore of both series premieres will air in the Thursday 9/8c slot after their premiere dates of Oct. 10 and Oct. 14 respectively.

The CW still regards Supernatural highly

If you’d have asked The CW what it expected from this fantasy genre show back in its second season, the hopes wouldn’t have been high. Ratings were low and it was on the bubble for cancellation. The third season did see an early renewal but ratings were still down. In the sixth and seventh seasons, the risk of cancellation was higher.

Yet, the Winchesters have survived and the show is now the longest-running series on the network. It’s been there from day one and The CW clearly thinks highly of the show. This is the only series on the network that is acting as a lead-in for all three new shows. All American will continue on Wednesday nights for a teen drama night following Riverdale, while Charmed will stick to Sundays after the encore of its premiere. No other encores are planned, except for reruns on their usual nights later in the season.

This must mean The CW thinks Supernatural fans will take up on other shows; that there’s a chance to help them succeed. Only time will tell if that works.
