Critics have been buzzing about the new Nicolas Cage led punk horror film Mandy since it premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January, and the first trailer proves just how insane it really is.

The first official trailer for Mandy was released and it gave audiences a small taste of the violence and gore that will be packed into upcoming film. Nicolas Cage plays a desperate man at the center of a showdown with a cult in a revenge fueled story.

In 1983, Red (Nicolas Cage) is a lumberjack who lives with his girlfriend (Andrea Riseborogh) in the Shadow Mountains. A cult leader soon becomes fixated with her and interrupts their idyllic life. So, Red must seek out the cultist members and embarks on a path toward vengeance. The trailer suggests that audiences will see an ax-wielding Cage, a chainsaw battle, motorcycle-riding demons, and lots of blood.

Both Aaron Stewart-Ahn and Panos Cosmatos teamed up on the script and Cosmatos directs the chaos on-screen. For Cosmatos, Mandy is the first feature he directed since his debut in 2010 on Beyond the Black Rainbow. That effort boasted a unique modernist style and atmosphere, but was considered to be a failure by critics. However, early reviews for Mandy suggest that Cosmatos has found his home in the action horror genre.

Cage continues to amaze audiences and Mandy proves that the Oscar-winner will take on these smaller films. Recently, Cage has performed at his best in the low-budget films Joe or Mom and Dad, which showed his range as an actor. Reviews swirling around Mandy paint Cage’s performance as the brutal centerpiece to a wild and gory ride.

Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson scored the film before he died in February of this year. He worked on films like Arrival and won the Golden Globe for Best Original Score on The Theory of Everything.

Mandy is going to be a fun horror film to look forward to and guarantees a high body count
