The latest season of Luke Cage might offer some fans hope that Marvel is course correcting the character of Danny Rand–also known as Iron Fist.

When Iron Fist season 1 premiered a few years ago, the response was anything but favorable. Critics were extremely displeased with the show and from the looks of it most of the fanbase agreed. There was just not much to like about the character of Danny Rand. Now, with Luke Cage season 2, things seem to be looking up for the Immortal Iron Fist.

Personally, the character was so bad that when it was announced he would be appearing in Season 2 of Luke Cage, I felt the need to rip off a car door and storm through the halls of Marvel destroying everyone in my path to the joyful sounds of “Bring da Ruckus.” Up until now, between The Defenders and Iron Fist, it just did not seem to mesh having Finn Jones whine about his chi in this universe.

Last week, Luke Cage season 2 premiered and I have been cautiously optimistic about giving it a chance because I felt so wounded by the last two Marvel-Netflix outings (with the exception of Jessica Jones). The show is absolutely fantastic and delivers the same charismatic greatness the first season delivered. Then several episodes into the show someone says, “Danny Rand”, and the only thing that crosses the cranium is “oh god, please not Danny.”

Then something wildly unpredictable happens. Danny the Iron Fist does not suck. He’s actually one of the better aspects of the show. This could be due to a number of reasons. Mike Coulter and Finn Jones have shockingly good chemistry for one. The both of them onscreen give off this superhero version of Lethal Weapon vibe.

It could also be the fact that Finn Jones works better as a supporting character rather than a lead. Some actors work better being the sidekick to the lead rather than the spotlight. Whatever it is, the actor feels more comfortable than he did in previous efforts.

The other reason could simply be that Marvel has found a way to course correct his character for the better. We knew that the studio might explore a smaller set of episodes for the second season of Iron Fist. Maybe this also included a change up to the brooding whiny persona of Danny Rand.

I’m still skeptical about Iron Fist season 2 but I’m glad to see Finn Jones finally having fun with his role. His appearance on this season of Luke Cage at least gives me more confidence that the show might be a vast improvement over season 1. Maybe it will restore your faith in Iron Fist as well.
