#FlashbackFriday is a good chance to look back over Supernatural episodes and see if there are elements we overlooked the first time. Today it’s all about Fresh Blood and that sign Dean stood next to at the end.

Towards the end of Supernatural Season 3, Episode 7, Dean stood next to a telling sign. It said 183 days. At first glance, that sign might not have meant anything, but in hindsight, it might have. After all, this series is one full of Easter eggs if you’re willing to look. “Fresh Blood” may have given us a clue as to the length of time Dean had for his crossroad deal.

It certainly makes sense, right? While we knew how long the season had left–well, we knew it was going to end in May 2008–we didn’t know what sort of timeline the series was running. Most shows like Supernatural run on a yearly basis, but that doesn’t mean one month in real time was one month in the show’s time. Putting Dean next to a sign was just a subtle and convenient way to tell us that he had 183 days left of his 365-day deal.

This made us understand a little more as to why Dean was starting to get scared. He was now six months through his life sentence. Death was coming knocking and there was absolutely nothing he could do about it. Sam realized just how scared Dean was and that was a moment we got in this specific episode.

There weren’t many mentions of the time Dean had left over the seasons. By being on Episode 7, you would have thought he’d still have nine months or so left. At the time of filming this, the cast and crew had no idea the writer’s strike would stop them producing episodes and make their 22-episode season only 16 episodes long. Being almost halfway through the season wasn’t a consideration at the time of filming this, but it conveniently worked.

The idea of 183 days makes sense. The next episode is set at Christmas, just over seven months since Sam died.
