The stand alone Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix is coming along nicely and has an October 2019 release date and a brand new title, Joker.

The Joker is the best villain in the Batman universe and is always getting new chances to shine in the spotlight. People who have never touched a comic book in their lives became obsessed with the villainous psychopath after watching Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Night. Heath Ledger’s earth-shattering performance had everyone saying “why so serious?” for years.

The DCEU tried their own attempt at recreating the character with Jared Leto, and was met with an extremely polarizing reaction. Needless to say Suicide Squad didn’t live up to the Joker hype but it made people thirsty for the character again. It didn’t take long to get numerous spin-offs going.

A Joker and Harley Quinn romance, two origins stories, and a Joker vs Harley Quinn movie are in the works. Does it seem weird that they’re making a romantic movie between them then immediately turning the two into enemies? At least wait a few years before turning the lovers against each other. It seems like they’re making as many Harley/Joker movies as they can before people start getting Gotham King and Queen of crime fatigue.

There are two Joker standalone movies in development, one starring Leto and another starring Joaquin Phoenix. After multiple speculations and confusion, it’s been confirmed that the two aren’t connected.

While Leto’s version has no updates as of yet, Phoenix’s is quickly taking shape.  Described as a “gritty character study but also as a broader cautionary tale of a man disregarded by society who becomes the ultimate supervillain.” It will be directed by Todd Philips and produced by Martin Scorsese.

"“This is a cheap movie, it’s $55 million”. Kevin Smith said. “They’re not spending…$55 [million] for a comic book property? That’s very inexpensive. They’re going ‘Logan’ model, which is keep it low-budget and make it more adult.”"

What we know about the film is that it has a small budget, the Joker’s mother will appear, and it will be a crime drama instead of a superhero blockbuster. Following the “The Killing Joke” storyline, the graphic novel by Alan Moore, it will tell the backstory of Batman’s arch nemesis as a struggling comedian who turns to crime and losing his mind in the process. Jim Gordon and his daughter, Barbara will most likely make an appearance, and the Bat of Gotham himself might pop in too. There’s been so much chaos over the Batman movies and the Batflack situation that I’m gong to make a guess and say Philips is going to avoid this by simply casting a new Batman.

Dropping the usual “The” in the name, the movie will be called “Joker.” Sounds more malicious, he’s not “The Joker”, he is “Joker.” It’s doing what the final Wolverine movie did and bluntly calling it by the character’s name, making it as bold as humanly possible. The movie’s release date is October 4, 2019 and might start production this fall. What do you think about this Joker film? Will this be another insane Leto performance or is this Joker’s chance to redeem himself?
